Spice Up Your Life!

This stunning Aglianico is brought to you by Campania’s leading winery, Feudi San Gregorio. Aglianico (pronounced: Ahl-YAN-ee-coh) is considered, along with Sangiovese and Nebbiolo, to be one of the three greatest Italian grape varieties. It is often referred to as the “Barolo of the South,” because of its highly complex, refined wines of impressive longevity. If you appreciate savory over fruity, this is the wine for you. Aglianico is noted for its pronounced savory flavors of smoked meats, game and pepper along with sweeter notes of cherry jam, sweet spices, licorice, coffee and cacao. One look at its intensely dark color and you’ll know this is a wine with brooding character. When young, Aglianico can be abrasive with its firm tannins and high acid. Give it some bottle age and it blossoms into a balanced mix of sweet, savory and even salty flavors. Now with 11 years of age, this stunner couldn’t be more of a molten chocolate-covered cherry, tinged-with-spice red to drink now! When pairing, consider bold dishes to match this wine’s assertive personality. Grilled meats are a natural pairing, along with mushrooms, smoky beans and kale. You’ll do well to match it with salty cheeses, too. Thinking ahead, you might want to have this one on hand for the holidays….or nights gazing at a roaring fire.
