A Classic, Super Second Wine!

Château Gruaud Larose bears the distinction of being one of St. Julien’s historic estates that often outperforms its Second Classified Growth status. Due its sturdy nature, it also has a reputation of needing 10-12 years of ageing before it is ready to drink. That’s why we’re big fans of the concept of Bordeaux’s 2nd label wines. Made from grapes not selected for the Grand Vin, it is soft-spoken and ready to drink in its youth compared to the chateau’s primary label. it is a fantastic choice when you’re looking for classic Bordeaux style from a known chateau without the hefty price tag and years of cellaring. Hailing from the smallest appellation in the Médoc, St. Julien wines are recognized as being particularly harmonious and elegant, yet still maintaining body and richness. The 2016 vintage is characterized by a lighter and fresher style compared to previous vintages of the decade. The wines are balanced, with luscious red fruit flavors and silky tannins. Made from 51% Cabernet Sauvignon and 31% Merlot with smaller parts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it is an expressive wine that offers layers of red currants, cassis, cigar box and dewy roses. Like the Grand Vin, this soft and fresh wine delivers above its price point – as it’s just entering its drinking window now, Bordeaux lovers will want to save room in their shopping carts for this one!
