We’re Crazy for Les Crais!

In the small village of Auxey-Duresses, situated between famous neighbors Volnay and Meursault, lies the Domaine of 5th generation winemaker, Pascal Prunier. In 1983 he decided to launch his own Domaine with his wife, Christine Bonheur, with a small holding of rented vines. Fast forward to today and his Domaine comprises 8 hectares (just under 20 acres) throughout the Cotes de Beaune. The vineyards in Auxey-Duresses are located on either side of a valley and are subject to cooler winds than the rest of the Cote de Beaune, which can lend to the wines a lean and angular character. The Les Crais vineyard lies squarely on the north side of the appellation, deep in the valley where there is a high concentration of limestone. This powerful terroir results in a white with a distinctive stoniness and razor-sharp acidity that cuts through plenty of pure Chardonnay fruit. Lots of green apple and citrus aromas abound, and these notes are echoed on the palate. In this part of the Cote de Beaune, the 2017 vintage was relatively calm compared to the rollercoaster that was 2016…and the result for the whites is a concentrated, flavorful and early-drinking style that will offer immediate pleasure and medium-term cellaring. This wine will fall right in stride for the Chablis lover, or anyone who enjoys a dry, minerally white with plenty of character. The white wines represent only a quarter of the total production of this appellation – we wouldn’t say they’re rare, but it would be a pity to miss this one!
