Big Bottles

Jeroboam, Rehoboam, Methuselah, Salmanazar, Balthazar and Nebuchadnezzar…we have them all! Not the Biblical Kings of course, but exceptionally fine wines in the ideal format! There is no better center piece at a table or in a cellar than one of these big bottles. Nothing says “party” like a Balthazar of wine. A Balthazar is 16x larger than a normal bottle…a 12-liter bottle! And why are these bottles named after the Biblical Kings you may ask? Well, no one really knows, but you can sure have some fun reading all the crazy stories.

Domaine-Bouchard-Pere-et-Fils-Corton-Charlemagne-Magnum-2016

Domaine Bouchard Pere et Fils, Corton Charlemagne Magnum, 2016

The 2016 Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru comes from vines located just above Corton with east-facing orientation. It has an attractive, almost Meursault-like bouquet with traces of walnut and hazelnut. The palate is fresh and quite effervescent on the entry, with a fine line of acidity if not quite the persistence of the finest Corton-Charlemagne that I have tasted. Nonetheless, there is plenty of energy locked in here and it should age well.

Y-Ygrec-Dry-Wine-of-DYquem-Magnum-2015

Y Ygrec, Dry Wine of D'Yquem Magnum, 2015

MAGNUM

“The Sauvignon Blanc (75% of the blend) was picked quickly from 25-27 August this year, the Sémillon on 3 and 4 September. It has six grams per liter of residual sugar and the pH, a sizzling 3.20. It has an intriguing bouquet of melted wax, white flowers and hints of sea spray, that marine influence becoming quite strong with aeration. The palate is fresh on the entry with fresh ginger and lemongrass, lively in the mouth with shades of orange rind and sour lemon towards the persistent finish. I would afford this several years in bottle and I suspect you will end up with a very distinctive dry Bordeaux from the most famous Sauternes estate.” – Wine Advocate

Domaine Bouchard Pere et Fils, Corton Charlemagne Magnum, 2014

“This is a very structured Corton-Charlemagne with phenolic strength and vivid fruit character of lightly cooked apples and hints of straw. So polished yet layered. Like a red wine in mouthfeel. Try in 2022.” (95 pts) -James Suckling

Beaux-Freres-Pinot-Noir-Beaux-Freres-Vnyd-Willamette-Valley-3-Liter-2016

Beaux Freres, Pinot Noir ''Beaux Freres Vnyd'' (Willamette Valley) 3 Liter, 2016

“Pale to medium ruby-purple in color, the 2016 Pinot Noir Willamette Valley is scented of warm black cherries and notions of blueberry preserves with touches of clove and nutmeg plus dried leaves, blood orange peel and dusty earth. Light to medium-bodied, it has beautiful purity of warm black cherries and black berries in the mouth with spicy accents, a frame of very fine-grained tannins and wonderful juicy acidity, finishing very long and very spicy.” – Wine Advocate (92 points)

Clos-de-la-Chapelle-Volnay-Taillepieds-Double-Magnum-2014

Clos de la Chapelle, Volnay Taillepieds Double Magnum, 2014

A beautifully colored wine, the nose is complex and the mid-palate has a lot of minerality. The finish is long with well structured tannins.
This well-structured wine can be easily paired with grilled meats, including lamb, rabbit, and beef, and strong cheeses, such as Epoisses, Delices de Bourgogne, Maconnais, or Roquefort. -Wine Maker’s Notes

Clos-de-la-Chapelle-Volnay-Taillepieds-Double-Magnum-2015

Clos de la Chapelle, Volnay Taillepieds Double Magnum, 2015

“As readers may recall, the Taillepieds here debuted in 2013, with the vines in this .47 hectare parcel averaging sixty-five years of age and lying between the rows of Domaines de Montille and Marquis d’Angerville. The 2015 Taillepieds is excellent and very pure in personality, with the bouquet wafting from the glass in a youthful blend of black cherries, cassis, incipient gamebird, lovely minerality, woodsmoke, a nice touch of stems and a very stylish base of lead pencilly new oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and superbly balanced, with a rock solid core of fruit, great soil signature, firm, fine-grained tannins, good acids and outstanding focus and grip on the long, complex and very, very promising finish. This may well prove to be the very finest expression of Taillepieds produced in Burgundy in 2015!” – John Gilman, View from the Cellar (94+ Points)

Clos-Canarelli-Rose-Corse-Figari-Corsica-6-Liter-2016

Clos Canarelli, Rose Corse Figari (Corsica) 6 Liter, 2016

“Yves’s choice to convert the domaine to both organic and biodynamic viticulture has made it possible for his wines to display an unusual freshness, complexity, and aromatic intensity that others in Figari have been unable to achieve. In the cellar, Yves only uses indigenous yeasts, and prefers slow, deliberate, precise fermentations, and leaves his reds unfiltered.” -Kermitlynch.com

Olivier-Bernstein-Gevrey-Chambertin-Cazetiers-Magnum-2013

Olivier Bernstein, Gevrey-Chambertin ''Cazetiers'' Magnum, 2013

After working in a different vocation Olivier established a small vineyard in Roussillon which became much in demand with some of the top chefs in France.
In 2007, Olivier created the négociant house which bears his name and produces very small quantities of very high-quality premiers and grands crus exclusively. Olivier works closely with select growers of very old vines; he and his team manage the viticulture in each climat. In 2012, he was able to purchase — a wonderful opportunity and rare occurrence in Burgundy — the Mazi-Chambertin Grand Cru and Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Les Champeaux vines which he had been working with for several vintages.
His wines from Burgundy are always of top quality and are sought after by Burgundy fans all over the world.

Clos-de-la-Chapelle-Pommard-Grands-Epenots-Double-Magnum-2015

Clos de la Chapelle, Pommard ''Grands Epenots'' Double Magnum, 2015

“The Grands Epenots bottling from Clos de la Chapelle hails from just under a quarter hectare of vines in this superb premier cru, with the vines here amongst the youngest the domaine farms, with the vineyards now twenty-five years of age. The 2015 Grands Epenots is another absolutely outstanding example of the vintage from Clos de la Chapelle, offering up great purity to go along with perfectly ripe fruit and exceptional expression of terroir. The bouquet wafts from the glass in a fine constellation of sappy red and black cherries, gamebird, dark chocolate, superb soil tones, fresh thyme, an exotic touch of lavender, a bit of bonfire and a discreet framing of new oak. On the palate the wine is a bit more reserved than the Chanlins, but also a very elegant interpretation of this vineyard, with its full-bodied format offering a superb core, lovely soil signature, ripe, fine-grained tannins and outstanding length and grip on the nascently complex finish. This will need a few more years than the Chanlins to start to stir, but it will be every bit as marvelous at its apogee.” – John Gilman, View from the Cellar (94 Points)

Clos-de-la-Chapelle-Pommard-Epenots-Double-Magnum-2014

Clos de la Chapelle, Pommard Epenots Double Magnum, 2014

Deep ruby color with garnet hues, this is a wine a both finesse and power. Typical vintages can last for decades as the tannic structure and acidity provide exceptional aging potential.Among the most structured wines in the Cote de Beaune, this excellent wine pairs well with the most flavorful of foods, including foie gras, wild game with mushrooms, pork, rich fish such as sea bass or scallops, and regional cheeses such as Delice de Pommard, Comte and Epoisses. -Wine Maker’s Notes

Lanson-Brut-LVC-Magnum-1996

Lanson, Vintage Collection Brut Magnum, 1996

“The Lanson Vintage Collection brings together vintage wines going back more than a century. Each year, a small number of bottles from 1976 and beyond are proposed to a restricted circle of connoisseurs, on a quest for oenological emotions. These wines are admired and coveted by connoisseurs throughout the world.

1996 was an exceptionally good year in Champagne, with weather conditions not unlike those of 1976. Lanson 1996 vintage, with its very mineral aromatic palette, is a very rich and complex wine promising many more years to come." -Edited from Lanson’s Website

Domaine-Vacheron-Sancerre-Imperial-2016

Domaine Vacheron, Sancerre Imperial, 2016

“With cellars located in the charming, hilltop town of Sancerre, Jean-Laurent and Jean-Dominique Vacheron have vineyards in mainly the eastern part of Sancerre on hard, flinty soils as well as smaller holding on softer limestone and clay soils. Their “village” Sancerre bottling draws from both terroirs to create a subtle, mineral and completely satisfying wine. One of the few estates in Sancerre to harvest entirely by hand this wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in tank for at least 4 months before bottling." -Winery notes
