Big Bottles

Jeroboam, Rehoboam, Methuselah, Salmanazar, Balthazar and Nebuchadnezzar…we have them all! Not the Biblical Kings of course, but exceptionally fine wines in the ideal format! There is no better center piece at a table or in a cellar than one of these big bottles. Nothing says “party” like a Balthazar of wine. A Balthazar is 16x larger than a normal bottle…a 12-liter bottle! And why are these bottles named after the Biblical Kings you may ask? Well, no one really knows, but you can sure have some fun reading all the crazy stories.

Hubert-Lamy-Saint-Aubin-Blanc-Derriere-Chez-Edward-1er-Cru-Double-Magnum-2015

Hubert Lamy, Saint Aubin Blanc ''Derriere Chez Edward'' 1er Cru Double Magnum, 2015

“The 2015 St Aubin 1er Cru Derrière Chez Edouard has a pretty bouquet with hints of white peach intermixed with fresh pear and frangipane aromas. The palate is marked by good acidity, very sharp, almost shrill, but keeping everything balanced on the penetrating finish. It just needs to gain a little more density during the remainder of its élevage, though Olivier Lamy’s wines have a tendency to do exactly that.”

Dom-Perignon-Magnum-2006

Dom Perignon, Magnum, 2009

“This is a DP that shows the ripeness of the 2009 vintage yet remains full of energy. Gorgeous aromas of cream, apple, mango, honeysuckle, and chalk follow through to a full body and super fine, tight texture. Dense and agile. Vinous. It’s like a top grand cru white Burgundy. Think Batard-Montrachet. More depth than the 2006. Drink now.”

Christian-Moreau-Chablis-Clos-des-Hospice-Double-Magnum-2012

Christian Moreau, Chablis ''Clos des Hospice'' Double Magnum, 2012

“This wine was tasted blind at the Burgundy 2012 tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Chablis Grand Cru les Clos des Hospices has a complex bouquet with potent flint and smoke aromas that are very well delineated. The palate is fresh and poised, and there is superb tension here and focus; it is backward but with great precision and penetration on the finish that sticks in the memory. This is just a wonderful, effervescent, tensile Chablis Grand Cru.”

Pavillon-Blanc-du-Chateau-Margaux-Bordeaux-Blanc-Magnum-2013

Pavillon Blanc du Chateau Margaux, (Margaux) Magnum, 2013

“Already in bottle, the 2013 Pavillon Blanc du Chateau Margaux (100% Sauvignon Blanc) reveals stunning notes of honeyed grapefruit, lemon zest and a hint of tropical fruit in a medium-bodied, crisp, fresh, lively style. Despite being fermented and aged in wood, the oak component is pushed to the background. The wine shows terrific acidity, purity and personality. Drink it over the next decade or more.”

Paul-Jaboulet-Aine-Hermitage-Blanc-La-Chapelle-Magnum-2010

Paul Jaboulet Aine, Hermitage Blanc ''La Chapelle'' Magnum, 2010

“The 2010 Hermitage La Chapelle Blanc is 100% Marsanne from the vineyard known as Maison Blanche situated at the top of the Hermitage appellation, above the famed lieu-dit for white Hermitage, Les Rocoules. This cuvee is very limited in availability so I’ll keep my notes brief. Aromas of white currants, pepper, quince and apricot marmalade are present in this full-bodied, gorgeously rich, pure, stunning white. It will unquestionably be a very long-lived white wine.”

Clos-de-la-Chapelle-Corton-Charlemagne-Double-Magnum-2015

Clos de la Chapelle, Corton Charlemagne Double Magnum, 2015

“Silky smooth and finely woven, with lemon, apple, spice and stone flavors, this is both complex and sophisticated. The vibrant structure drives the flavors, building to a long, mouthwatering aftertaste. Best from 2020 through 2032. 107 cases made.”
- Wine Spectator (94 points)

“Having vines on the Pernand side of the hill of Corton must have been an advantage in the hot summer of 2015, and the Clos de la Chapelle version in this vintage has turned out beautifully as a result. This is 13.5 percent alcohol in 2015 (all natural) and the wine is impeccably balanced and drinking with loads of personality out of the blocks. The superb bouquet wafts from the glass in a classic blend of pear, apple, a touch of iodine, stony soil tones, spring flowers, hazelnuts and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and nicely broad-shouldered in style, with excellent concentration at the core, fine soil signature, bright acids and impressive length and grip on the nascently complex and perfectly balanced finish. This is very delicious in its wide open youth, but really could do with at least a couple of years in the cellar to allow its secondary layers of complexity to start to emerge.”

Moet-Chandon-Ice-Imperial-NV-Double-Magnum

Moet & Chandon, Ice Imperial NV Double Magnum

Moët & Chandon introduces Moët Ice Impérial, the world’s first Champagne specifically created to be enjoyed on ice during the day in warmer or cooler weather. Moët Ice Impérial’s Champagne blend was expertly developed in France by Chef de Cave Benoît Gouez from the House’s signature crus to intensify the taste experience of icy freshness and powerful aromas of tropical fruits. It draws its fruitiness from tropical notes with an original flavor twist of red berries and its freshness from a select proportion of Chardonnay grapes to ensure crispness and thirst-quenching sensation.

Lanson-Vintage-Collection-Magnum-1988

Lanson, Vintage Collection Magnum, 1988

“The 1988 Lanson Vintage Collection bottling is really singing at the present time, with the beautiful nose showing just a bit more complexity and vibrancy than the very, very good 1990 version that preceded it at our tasting. The nose jumps from the glass in a blaze of apple, orange zest, pear, superb minerality, plenty of smokiness and a nice touch of sea salts in the upper register. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and still very racy in profile, with a rock solid core, lovely focus and grip, pinpoint bubbles and a very long, complex and seamless finish. The 1988 Lanson is now drinking beautifully out of magnum, but it is still early days for this wine and it may yet improve with further bottle age. 2016-2050.”

DAngerville-Volnay-Clos-des-Ducs-Magnum-2016

D'Angerville, Volnay ''Clos des Ducs'' Magnum, 2016

“Interestingly, this seems to possess elements of all three of the preceding wines as the cool and ultra-elegant nose exhibits a broad range of spice and floral elements on the black cherry and plum-suffused aromas. There is almost painful intensity to the chiseled, focused and stony medium weight flavors that coat the palate with dry extract on the youthfully austere, powerful and very serious finish. This is very clearly built to age and a wine that should really not be touched for at least a decade. In a word, terrific.”

Beaux Freres, Pinot Noir ''Beaux Freres Vnyd'' (Willamette Valley) 5 Liter, 2016

“From vines planted in 1988 in the original Beaux Frères vineyard, the 2016 Pinot Noir The Beaux Frères Vineyard is pale to medium ruby-purple in color with a nose of fresh, crisp red and black cherries and cranberries with warm earth, dried black tea leaves and potpourri perfume plus notes of crushed rock. Light to medium-bodied, the palate has a wonderful concentration of juicy, ripe black berries and cherries in the mouth, with spicy accents of nutmeg, potpourri and dried autumn leaves, a wonderful frame of fine-grained tannins and juicy acidity carrying the very long, spicy finish. 2,700 cases produced.”

Domaine-Bouchard-Pere-et-Fils-Chevalier-Montrachet-Grand-Cru-Magnum-2016

Domaine Bouchard Pere et Fils, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru Magnum, 2016

“The 2016 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru has a detailed bouquet with attractive scents of almond and white chocolate tincturing the citrus fruit. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, quite cohesive and understated at first (like the Domaine Leflaive tasted earlier that day) with a sappy and convincing finish that is surfeit with minerals and a hint of tangerine. This is a very impressive, sophisticated Chevalier-Montrachet that I actually have a preference for over the La Cabotte this year.”
