Big Bottles

Jeroboam, Rehoboam, Methuselah, Salmanazar, Balthazar and Nebuchadnezzar…we have them all! Not the Biblical Kings of course, but exceptionally fine wines in the ideal format! There is no better center piece at a table or in a cellar than one of these big bottles. Nothing says “party” like a Balthazar of wine. A Balthazar is 16x larger than a normal bottle…a 12-liter bottle! And why are these bottles named after the Biblical Kings you may ask? Well, no one really knows, but you can sure have some fun reading all the crazy stories.

Dom-de-Cherisey-Puligny-Montrachet-Hameau-de-Blagny-Magnum-2011

Dom. de Cherisey, Puligny Montrachet Hameau de Blagny Magnum, 2011

“The 2011 Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Hameau de Blagny showed perplexingly when tasted blind earlier in 2014, but encountering it once more at the domaine, the SO2 has cleared to reveal a lovely Puligny. It has a really wonderful bouquet with orange zest, lime and honeysuckle aromas that have a touch more complexity than the 2012. This has a very saline/marine influenced bouquet with crisp acidity and hints of almond and bruised apple toward the finish that has a lovely flinty aftertaste. This is a very fine Puligny-Montrachet that should mature nicely over 8-10 years.”

Domaine-Bouchard-Pere-et-Fils-Le-Corton-Grand-Cru-Magnum-2016

Domaine Bouchard Pere et Fils, Le Corton Grand Cru Magnum, 2016

“The 2016 Corton Grand Cru comes from red clay soils that are just 80 centimeters deep before you hit the limestone bedrock. It has a finely tuned bouquet with cranberry, raspberry preserve and crushed strawberry scents, crushed roses developing with time. The palate is well balanced with a fine line of acidity, brisk and tensile from start to finish and then pulling back so as not to overdo the finish. This is a case of less is more in a wine and it is likely to surpass the 2015 Corton.”

Domaine-Bouchard-Pere-et-Fils-Le-Corton-Grand-Cru-Magnum-2015

Domaine Bouchard Pere et Fils, Le Corton Grand Cru Magnum, 2015

“Here the wood treatment is a bit more discreet though it’s still not subtle on the exceptionally cool and fresh but ripe nose that offers up plenty of sauvage and earth hints that suffuse the black cherry and lilac scents. The dense, bold and overtly muscular and powerful big-bodied flavors possess an abundance of sappy extract that coats the palate and buffers the extremely firm tannic spine on the immensely persistent finish that is less austere than it usually is. This is breathtakingly good and despite my extended drinking window, it should be approachable after only 7 to 8 years.”

Guigal-Cote-Rotie-Chateau-DAmpuis-Magnum-2013

Guigal, Cote Rotie ''Chateau D'Ampuis'' Magnum, 2013

“Tasted as a final blend and scheduled to be bottled just after my visit, the 2013 Côte Rôtie Chateau d’Ampuis is a smokin’ good wine in the vintage. Deep, concentrated and structured, with classic and masculine notes of graphite, smoked black fruits and crushed rocks, this full-bodied beauty has bright acidity, ripe tannin and beautiful length. It needs 7-8 years of cellaring to hit maturity and will have two to three decades of overall longevity.”

Terrebrune-Bandol-Rose-Double-Magnum-2016

Terrebrune, Bandol Rose Double Magnum, 2016

“The estate lies in a unique geological zone, for Bandol. The top soil is brown clay (hence the name of the estate!) which sits on a bed of limestone requiring the vine roots to penetrate deeply. The viticulture has always been organic and the estate is today certified Agriculture Biologique. Three wines are produced, one of each colour, and no special or super-cuvées or vineyard selections. The red is always around 85% Mourvèdre and the Rosé 60%, while the Blanc is based on Clairette. The reds are aged in large, old oak foudres for 18 months to contribute balance and finesse before bottling.” -Importer notes

Clos-de-la-Chapelle-Corton-Bressandes-Magnum-2014

Clos de la Chapelle, Corton Bressandes Magnum, 2014

LIMITED QUANTITIES AVAILABLE
Red wines from Corton are the only grand crus in the Cote de Beaune Viewed by many as one of the top Cortons, Corton Bressandes rivals Clos du Roi for the best grand cru red wine in the region.

Vineyard
Our 0.20 hectares of 45 year old vines are located on a combination of clay and limestone soil, with good drainage and excellent exposure. This produces a truly elegant Corton that combines grace and power.

A dark ruby color leads to a nose of freshness and refinement followed by a mid-palate with generous layers of stone, earth and plum. The marvelously long finish is complex and satisfying.

J-Lassalle-Cuvee-Angeline-Brut-Champagne-Magnum-2009

J. Lassalle, ''Cuvee Angeline'' Brut Champagne Magnum, 2009

Its name evokes sweetness and elegance, an invitation to dream. The mind wanders and discovers a deep emotion ».

The first vintage was created in 1973 by Jules Lassalle and launched in 1978, the same year as the birth of his granddaughter … Angeline.

Pale golden yellow color. On the first nose freshness and minerality are associated with a light fragance of licorice and fresh mint. After airing, more distinct fruity fragances of yellow fruits (apricot, quince) and pastry (almond praline) appear in a velvety sensation. On the palate a round and full texture brings body to the wine. Salinity highlights the taste until the finish and makes it more palatable: the signature of a fine gastronomic wine.

DAngerville-Volnay-Champans-1er-Cru-Magnum-2014

D'Angerville, Volnay ''Champans'' 1er Cru Magnum, 2014

“The 2014 Volnay 1er Cru Champans has a more pointed and angular nose at the moment when compared with the Taillepieds. It is probably the most primal of the Volnay, black cherry and cassis fruit suffused with tangible mineralité, but it needs to be knitted together during the remainder of its élevage. The palate is very well balanced, the wood component again needing time to enmesh, but there is good substance here — even if I prefer the elegance of the Caillerets on the finish (at the moment).”

Albert-Bichot-Chablis-Moutonne-Grand-Cru-Domaine-Long-Depaquit-Magnum-2015

Albert Bichot, Chablis ''Moutonne'' Grand Cru Domaine Long-Depaquit Magnum, 2015

“Regarded almost as a Grand Cru in its own right, the Moutonne vineyard, wholly owned by Albert Bichot, is in a corner of the Vaudésir Grand Cru vineyard. In this sumptuous year, the wine is more generous, ripe yellow fruits than mineral texture. The acidity and the tangy aftertaste are a reminder that this is from cool-climate Chablis.”

Domaine-Michel-Gros-Vosne-Romanee-Clos-de-Reas-1er-Cru-Magnum-2015

Domaine Michel Gros, Vosne-Romanee Clos de Reas 1er Cru Magnum, 2015

Outstanding! A ripe yet attractively fresh nose combines notes of red currant, spice, herbal tea and a hint of dark pinot liqueur. The vibrant medium weight flavors possess a finer mouth feel if less minerality and muscle, all wrapped in a sleek, delicious, focused and beautifully well-balanced finale. This will probably be accessible on the younger side as most vintages of Clos des Réas generally are.”

Domaine-Bouchard-Pere-et-Fils-Corton-Charlemagne-Magnum-2016

Domaine Bouchard Pere et Fils, Corton Charlemagne Magnum, 2016

“The 2016 Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru comes from vines located just above Corton with east-facing orientation. It has an attractive, almost Meursault-like bouquet with traces of walnut and hazelnut. The palate is fresh and quite effervescent on the entry, with a fine line of acidity if not quite the persistence of the finest Corton-Charlemagne that I have tasted. Nonetheless, there is plenty of energy locked in here and it should age well.”

Y-Ygrec-Dry-Wine-of-DYquem-Magnum-2015

Y Ygrec, Dry Wine of D'Yquem Magnum, 2015

MAGNUM

“The Sauvignon Blanc (75% of the blend) was picked quickly from 25-27 August this year, the Sémillon on 3 and 4 September. It has six grams per liter of residual sugar and the pH, a sizzling 3.20. It has an intriguing bouquet of melted wax, white flowers and hints of sea spray, that marine influence becoming quite strong with aeration. The palate is fresh on the entry with fresh ginger and lemongrass, lively in the mouth with shades of orange rind and sour lemon towards the persistent finish. I would afford this several years in bottle and I suspect you will end up with a very distinctive dry Bordeaux from the most famous Sauternes estate.”

Beaux Freres, Pinot Noir ''Beaux Freres Vnyd'' (Willamette Valley) 3 Liter, 2016

“Pale to medium ruby-purple in color, the 2016 Pinot Noir Willamette Valley is scented of warm black cherries and notions of blueberry preserves with touches of clove and nutmeg plus dried leaves, blood orange peel and dusty earth. Light to medium-bodied, it has beautiful purity of warm black cherries and black berries in the mouth with spicy accents, a frame of very fine-grained tannins and wonderful juicy acidity, finishing very long and very spicy.” – Wine Advocate (92 points)
