Big Bottles

Jeroboam, Rehoboam, Methuselah, Salmanazar, Balthazar and Nebuchadnezzar…we have them all! Not the Biblical Kings of course, but exceptionally fine wines in the ideal format! There is no better center piece at a table or in a cellar than one of these big bottles. Nothing says “party” like a Balthazar of wine. A Balthazar is 16x larger than a normal bottle…a 12-liter bottle! And why are these bottles named after the Biblical Kings you may ask? Well, no one really knows, but you can sure have some fun reading all the crazy stories.

Christian-Moreau-Chablis-Les-Clos-Double-Magnum-2007

Christian Moreau, Chablis ''Les Clos'' Double Magnum, 2007

“The Moreau 2007 Chablis Les Clos mingles fresh white peach, rhubarb, orange zest, and vanilla in the nose, and comes to the palate with a corresponding sense of invigoration, refreshment and tart, pungent chew.”

Lanson-Clos-Lanson-Brut-Magnum-2006

Lanson, Clos Lanson Brut Magnum, 2006

“From the immured one-hectare vineyard on the top of the hill, which also harbors the cellar of Champagne Lanson that dates back into the 18th century, the 2006 Clos Lanson is 100% first press Chardonnay from a very fine, chalky soil. It was fermented and aged in Argonne oak until spring 2007 (no malolactic fermentation), and disgorged after seven and a half years on the lees in December 2014 as Brut Nature with a dosage of three grams per liter. This bright yellow-golden colored prestige Champagne offers a brilliant nose of pure and ripe Chardonnay, along with delicate chalky flavors. Full and round on the palate, with a nice freshness and purity, this is a very elegant and well-balanced Blanc de Blancs. it has an aromatic as well as clear, fresh and mineral finish. This very first release has a very good length and characteristic mineral taste, with iodine notes along with ripe fruit and vanilla brioche flavors in the finish. This is a great new entry in the Lanson portfolio and it will improve with age. Total production is 7,870 serially numbered bottles.”

Domaine-Lignier-Michelot-Clos-de-La-Roche-Magnum-2013

Domaine Lignier-Michelot, Clos de La Roche Magnum, 2013

“Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru from Virgile Lignier has a vivid bouquet with animated blackberry and raspberry preserve aromas, fine mineralité and well integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red cherries and raspberry, sweet tannin, fine acidity and a juicy, quite structured finish with a generous pinch of white pepper spicing things up. This is a resounding success. Tasted September 2016.”

Dom-Perignon-Magnum-2006

Dom Perignon, Magnum, 2009

“This is a DP that shows the ripeness of the 2009 vintage yet remains full of energy. Gorgeous aromas of cream, apple, mango, honeysuckle, and chalk follow through to a full body and super fine, tight texture. Dense and agile. Vinous. It’s like a top grand cru white Burgundy. Think Batard-Montrachet. More depth than the 2006. Drink now.”

Christian-Moreau-Chablis-Clos-des-Hospice-Double-Magnum-2012

Christian Moreau, Chablis ''Clos des Hospice'' Double Magnum, 2012

“This wine was tasted blind at the Burgundy 2012 tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Chablis Grand Cru les Clos des Hospices has a complex bouquet with potent flint and smoke aromas that are very well delineated. The palate is fresh and poised, and there is superb tension here and focus; it is backward but with great precision and penetration on the finish that sticks in the memory. This is just a wonderful, effervescent, tensile Chablis Grand Cru.”

Pavillon-Blanc-du-Chateau-Margaux-Bordeaux-Blanc-Magnum-2013

Pavillon Blanc du Chateau Margaux, (Margaux) Magnum, 2013

“Already in bottle, the 2013 Pavillon Blanc du Chateau Margaux (100% Sauvignon Blanc) reveals stunning notes of honeyed grapefruit, lemon zest and a hint of tropical fruit in a medium-bodied, crisp, fresh, lively style. Despite being fermented and aged in wood, the oak component is pushed to the background. The wine shows terrific acidity, purity and personality. Drink it over the next decade or more.”

Clos-de-la-Chapelle-Corton-Charlemagne-Double-Magnum-2015

Clos de la Chapelle, Corton Charlemagne Double Magnum, 2015

“Silky smooth and finely woven, with lemon, apple, spice and stone flavors, this is both complex and sophisticated. The vibrant structure drives the flavors, building to a long, mouthwatering aftertaste. Best from 2020 through 2032. 107 cases made.”
- Wine Spectator (94 points)

“Having vines on the Pernand side of the hill of Corton must have been an advantage in the hot summer of 2015, and the Clos de la Chapelle version in this vintage has turned out beautifully as a result. This is 13.5 percent alcohol in 2015 (all natural) and the wine is impeccably balanced and drinking with loads of personality out of the blocks. The superb bouquet wafts from the glass in a classic blend of pear, apple, a touch of iodine, stony soil tones, spring flowers, hazelnuts and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and nicely broad-shouldered in style, with excellent concentration at the core, fine soil signature, bright acids and impressive length and grip on the nascently complex and perfectly balanced finish. This is very delicious in its wide open youth, but really could do with at least a couple of years in the cellar to allow its secondary layers of complexity to start to emerge.”

Moet-Chandon-Ice-Imperial-NV-Double-Magnum

Moet & Chandon, Ice Imperial NV Double Magnum

Moët & Chandon introduces Moët Ice Impérial, the world’s first Champagne specifically created to be enjoyed on ice during the day in warmer or cooler weather. Moët Ice Impérial’s Champagne blend was expertly developed in France by Chef de Cave Benoît Gouez from the House’s signature crus to intensify the taste experience of icy freshness and powerful aromas of tropical fruits. It draws its fruitiness from tropical notes with an original flavor twist of red berries and its freshness from a select proportion of Chardonnay grapes to ensure crispness and thirst-quenching sensation.

Lanson-Vintage-Collection-Magnum-1988

Lanson, Vintage Collection Magnum, 1988

“The 1988 Lanson Vintage Collection bottling is really singing at the present time, with the beautiful nose showing just a bit more complexity and vibrancy than the very, very good 1990 version that preceded it at our tasting. The nose jumps from the glass in a blaze of apple, orange zest, pear, superb minerality, plenty of smokiness and a nice touch of sea salts in the upper register. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and still very racy in profile, with a rock solid core, lovely focus and grip, pinpoint bubbles and a very long, complex and seamless finish. The 1988 Lanson is now drinking beautifully out of magnum, but it is still early days for this wine and it may yet improve with further bottle age. 2016-2050.”

Beaux-Freres-Pinot-Noir-Beaux-Freres-Vnyd-Willamette-Valley-5-Liter-2016

Beaux Freres, Pinot Noir ''Beaux Freres Vnyd'' (Willamette Valley) 5 Liter, 2016

“From vines planted in 1988 in the original Beaux Frères vineyard, the 2016 Pinot Noir The Beaux Frères Vineyard is pale to medium ruby-purple in color with a nose of fresh, crisp red and black cherries and cranberries with warm earth, dried black tea leaves and potpourri perfume plus notes of crushed rock. Light to medium-bodied, the palate has a wonderful concentration of juicy, ripe black berries and cherries in the mouth, with spicy accents of nutmeg, potpourri and dried autumn leaves, a wonderful frame of fine-grained tannins and juicy acidity carrying the very long, spicy finish. 2,700 cases produced.”

Domaine-Bouchard-Pere-et-Fils-Chevalier-Montrachet-Grand-Cru-Magnum-2016

Domaine Bouchard Pere et Fils, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru Magnum, 2016

“The 2016 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru has a detailed bouquet with attractive scents of almond and white chocolate tincturing the citrus fruit. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, quite cohesive and understated at first (like the Domaine Leflaive tasted earlier that day) with a sappy and convincing finish that is surfeit with minerals and a hint of tangerine. This is a very impressive, sophisticated Chevalier-Montrachet that I actually have a preference for over the La Cabotte this year.”

Ceretto-Barolo-Cannubi-San-Lorenzo-Magnum-2005

Ceretto, Barolo Cannubi San Lorenzo Magnum, 2005

“The 2005 Barolo Cannubi (magnum) is a touch compact and austere, in keeping with the style of the vintage. The wine is a bit tight at first, but then opens up nicely in the glass. This is a mid-weight Cannubi from Ceretto, but the wine’s freshness, finesse and length all suggest it will develop well in bottle.”
