Big Bottles

Jeroboam, Rehoboam, Methuselah, Salmanazar, Balthazar and Nebuchadnezzar…we have them all! Not the Biblical Kings of course, but exceptionally fine wines in the ideal format! There is no better center piece at a table or in a cellar than one of these big bottles. Nothing says “party” like a Balthazar of wine. A Balthazar is 16x larger than a normal bottle…a 12-liter bottle! And why are these bottles named after the Biblical Kings you may ask? Well, no one really knows, but you can sure have some fun reading all the crazy stories.

Clos-de-la-Chapelle-Pommard-Grands-Epenots-Magnum-2015

Clos de la Chapelle, Pommard ''Grands Epenots'' Magnum, 2015

“The Grands Epenots bottling from Clos de la Chapelle hails from just under a quarter hectare of vines in this superb premier cru, with the vines here amongst the youngest the domaine farms, with the vineyards now twenty-five years of age. The 2015 Grands Epenots is another absolutely outstanding example of the vintage from Clos de la Chapelle, offering up great purity to go along with perfectly ripe fruit and exceptional expression of terroir. The bouquet wafts from the glass in a fine constellation of sappy red and black cherries, gamebird, dark chocolate, superb soil tones, fresh thyme, an exotic touch of lavender, a bit of bonfire and a discreet framing of new oak. On the palate the wine is a bit more reserved than the Chanlins, but also a very elegant interpretation of this vineyard, with its full-bodied format offering a superb core, lovely soil signature, ripe, fine-grained tannins and outstanding length and grip on the nascently complex finish. This will need a few more years than the Chanlins to start to stir, but it will be every bit as marvelous at its apogee.”

Famiglia Cotarella, ''Montiano'' Double Magnum, 2014

“This leads with a pure beam of black currant and black cherry fruit, layered with light, sculpted tannins and accents of eucalyptus, star anise and mineral. Finely meshed and elegant, this opens with air. Merlot. Drink now through 2027.”

Librandi-Gravello-2014

Librandi, ''Gravello'', 2014

DOUBLE MAGNUM

This is a “Super Calabrian” wine made from the indigenous Gaglioppo and international Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. Gravello is a fantasy name, but “grave” in Italian means “serious” and “important,” which is a reference to the complexity and sophistication of this wine. The suffix of “-ello” makes this meaning a bit lighter, as the wine is accessible and drinking beautifully right now.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-red in color, Gravello is intensely aromatic with notes of blackberry, ripe cherry, coffee, and cassis. On the palate, it is rich with velvety tannins and a persistent finish.

Food Pairing
Pair this wine with grilled game, Mornay sauces, Chateaubriand, and duxelles-stuffed filet mignon.

Domaine Bouchard Pere et Fils, Meursault ''Genevrieres'' Magnum, 2015

“A mineral edge with aromas of lightly spicy white peaches and sweet pastries, all leading to a palate with a very supple and fluid feel. Great acidity and depth. Rich, fluid, focused and quite long. Drink now.”

Domaine-de-Cherisey-Puligny-Montrachet-Hameau-de-Blagny-Magnum-2015

Domaine de Cherisey, Puligny Montrachet Hameau de Blagny Magnum, 2015

“The 2015 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Hameau de Blagny was too reduced on the nose for me to read this barrel sample. The palate is much more indicative of where this wine is going to go: tensile from the start, steely with vibrant acidity. This demonstrates fine weight in the mouth, a keen line of acidity, a dash of spice on the tight-wound finish that will clearly require 4-5 years to really find its groove, which it will.”

Domaine de Cherisey, Puligny Montrachet Les Chalumeaux Magnum, 2015

“The 2015 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chalumaux, picked around 2-3 September from vines at the lowest altitude for the domaine, has a lovely, walnut and dried honey-scented bouquet that manages to convey its mineralité and delineation without compromise. The palate is well balanced with well-integrated oak, a dash of spice on the entry, almost Meursault-like in style with a pleasant reductive note right on the finish that does nothing to diminish the terroir expression. Sublime.”

Domaine-de-Cherisey-Meursault-Blagny-La-Genelotte-Magnum-2015

Domaine de Cherisey, Meursault Blagny La Genelotte Magnum, 2015

“The 2015 Meursault-Blagny 1er Cru La Genelotte, from vines planted between 1946 and 1955, was showing just a little reduction on the nose, but that soon dissipated to reveal enticing scents of citrus peel, dandelion and cold wet granite. So much energy palpable here. The palate is fresh and vibrant on the entry, the acidity very well judged and lending this vivacity and tension all the way through from start to finish. This will be wonderful once in bottle—just exquisite!”

Clos-de-la-Chapelle-Corton-Rognets-Magnum-2015

Clos de la Chapelle, Corton Rognets Magnum, 2015

“The 2015 Corton “Rognet” from Clos de la Chapelle is outstanding, offering up great purity to go with the depth, power and aging potential of the very best 2015s. Readers may recall that these fifty year-old vines lie just above those of Jean-Nicolas Meo on the slope in the heart of this lieu a dit, which lies alongside of Bressandes and Renardes. As deep as all of the top premier crus were here in 2015, there is an extra element of profundity evident in the Rognet, but one will have to be patient to enjoy this wine at its zenith. The very promising bouquet offers up scents of black cherries, dark berries, roasted venison, dark chocolate, a superb base of soil, woodsmoke and cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and tangy, with a rock solid core, impressive transparency, firm, ripe tannins, excellent focus and grip and a very long, poised and youthfully complex finish. This is going to be a long-distance runner par excellent, but once it is ready to drink, it is going to be pure magic."

Dom-de-Cherisey-Meursault-Blagny-La-Genelotte-Magnum-2011

Dom. de Cherisey, Meursault Blagny ''La Genelotte'' Magnum, 2011

“Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Meursault Blagny 1er Cru La Genelotte 2011 from Martelet de Cherisey exhibits a slight flatness on the nose compared to the first wine, again with just a little SO2 evident. The palate is medium-bodied with a pleasant saltiness on the entry. This is nicely balanced with well-judged acidity, that saline element threaded through right to the poised, mineral-tinged finish. Fine.”

Dom-de-Cherisey-Puligny-Montrachet-Hameau-de-Blagny-Magnum-2011

Dom. de Cherisey, Puligny Montrachet Hameau de Blagny Magnum, 2011

“The 2011 Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Hameau de Blagny showed perplexingly when tasted blind earlier in 2014, but encountering it once more at the domaine, the SO2 has cleared to reveal a lovely Puligny. It has a really wonderful bouquet with orange zest, lime and honeysuckle aromas that have a touch more complexity than the 2012. This has a very saline/marine influenced bouquet with crisp acidity and hints of almond and bruised apple toward the finish that has a lovely flinty aftertaste. This is a very fine Puligny-Montrachet that should mature nicely over 8-10 years.”

Domaine-Bouchard-Pere-et-Fils-Le-Corton-Grand-Cru-Magnum-2016

Domaine Bouchard Pere et Fils, Le Corton Grand Cru Magnum, 2016

“The 2016 Corton Grand Cru comes from red clay soils that are just 80 centimeters deep before you hit the limestone bedrock. It has a finely tuned bouquet with cranberry, raspberry preserve and crushed strawberry scents, crushed roses developing with time. The palate is well balanced with a fine line of acidity, brisk and tensile from start to finish and then pulling back so as not to overdo the finish. This is a case of less is more in a wine and it is likely to surpass the 2015 Corton.”

Domaine Bouchard Pere et Fils, Le Corton Grand Cru Magnum, 2015

“Here the wood treatment is a bit more discreet though it’s still not subtle on the exceptionally cool and fresh but ripe nose that offers up plenty of sauvage and earth hints that suffuse the black cherry and lilac scents. The dense, bold and overtly muscular and powerful big-bodied flavors possess an abundance of sappy extract that coats the palate and buffers the extremely firm tannic spine on the immensely persistent finish that is less austere than it usually is. This is breathtakingly good and despite my extended drinking window, it should be approachable after only 7 to 8 years.”

Guigal-Cote-Rotie-Chateau-DAmpuis-Magnum-2013

Guigal, Cote Rotie ''Chateau D'Ampuis'' Magnum, 2013

“Tasted as a final blend and scheduled to be bottled just after my visit, the 2013 Côte Rôtie Chateau d’Ampuis is a smokin’ good wine in the vintage. Deep, concentrated and structured, with classic and masculine notes of graphite, smoked black fruits and crushed rocks, this full-bodied beauty has bright acidity, ripe tannin and beautiful length. It needs 7-8 years of cellaring to hit maturity and will have two to three decades of overall longevity.”

Terrebrune-Bandol-Rose-Double-Magnum-2016

Terrebrune, Bandol Rose Double Magnum, 2016

“The estate lies in a unique geological zone, for Bandol. The top soil is brown clay (hence the name of the estate!) which sits on a bed of limestone requiring the vine roots to penetrate deeply. The viticulture has always been organic and the estate is today certified Agriculture Biologique. Three wines are produced, one of each colour, and no special or super-cuvées or vineyard selections. The red is always around 85% Mourvèdre and the Rosé 60%, while the Blanc is based on Clairette. The reds are aged in large, old oak foudres for 18 months to contribute balance and finesse before bottling.” -Importer notes

“The wine is dynamite, soaring from the glass in a blaze of red and black cherries, red currants, a touch of venison, coriander seed, a bit of bonfire, raw cocoa, stony soil tones and cedary wood. On the palate the wine is deep, fullbodied and nascently complex, with a very sappy core of fruit, lovely transparency, finegrained tannins and a very long, tangy and promising finish. Great juice in the making. 2025-2075.”
- John Gilman (95 points)

“Generous wood and menthol again suffuses the ripe and fresh nose that consists of dark cherry, earth, forest floor and soft sauvage nuances. There is really lovely delineation to the big-bodied and also overtly powerful flavors that possess a bit more refinement before concluding in a tautly muscular, focused and attractively textured finish that is serious but not really austere. This is even more structured than the Rognet and indisputably going to require an extended stay in a cool cellar. Patience!”
