Big Bottles

Jeroboam, Rehoboam, Methuselah, Salmanazar, Balthazar and Nebuchadnezzar…we have them all! Not the Biblical Kings of course, but exceptionally fine wines in the ideal format! There is no better center piece at a table or in a cellar than one of these big bottles. Nothing says “party” like a Balthazar of wine. A Balthazar is 16x larger than a normal bottle…a 12-liter bottle! And why are these bottles named after the Biblical Kings you may ask? Well, no one really knows, but you can sure have some fun reading all the crazy stories.

Dom-de-Cherisey-Puligny-Montrachet-Hameau-de-Blagny-Magnum-2011

Dom. de Cherisey, Puligny Montrachet Hameau de Blagny Magnum, 2011

“The 2011 Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Hameau de Blagny showed perplexingly when tasted blind earlier in 2014, but encountering it once more at the domaine, the SO2 has cleared to reveal a lovely Puligny. It has a really wonderful bouquet with orange zest, lime and honeysuckle aromas that have a touch more complexity than the 2012. This has a very saline/marine influenced bouquet with crisp acidity and hints of almond and bruised apple toward the finish that has a lovely flinty aftertaste. This is a very fine Puligny-Montrachet that should mature nicely over 8-10 years.”

Domaine-Bouchard-Pere-et-Fils-Le-Corton-Grand-Cru-Magnum-2016

Domaine Bouchard Pere et Fils, Le Corton Grand Cru Magnum, 2016

“The 2016 Corton Grand Cru comes from red clay soils that are just 80 centimeters deep before you hit the limestone bedrock. It has a finely tuned bouquet with cranberry, raspberry preserve and crushed strawberry scents, crushed roses developing with time. The palate is well balanced with a fine line of acidity, brisk and tensile from start to finish and then pulling back so as not to overdo the finish. This is a case of less is more in a wine and it is likely to surpass the 2015 Corton.”

Domaine-Bouchard-Pere-et-Fils-Le-Corton-Grand-Cru-Magnum-2015

Domaine Bouchard Pere et Fils, Le Corton Grand Cru Magnum, 2015

“Here the wood treatment is a bit more discreet though it’s still not subtle on the exceptionally cool and fresh but ripe nose that offers up plenty of sauvage and earth hints that suffuse the black cherry and lilac scents. The dense, bold and overtly muscular and powerful big-bodied flavors possess an abundance of sappy extract that coats the palate and buffers the extremely firm tannic spine on the immensely persistent finish that is less austere than it usually is. This is breathtakingly good and despite my extended drinking window, it should be approachable after only 7 to 8 years.”

Guigal-Cote-Rotie-Chateau-DAmpuis-Magnum-2013

Guigal, Cote Rotie ''Chateau D'Ampuis'' Magnum, 2013

“Tasted as a final blend and scheduled to be bottled just after my visit, the 2013 Côte Rôtie Chateau d’Ampuis is a smokin’ good wine in the vintage. Deep, concentrated and structured, with classic and masculine notes of graphite, smoked black fruits and crushed rocks, this full-bodied beauty has bright acidity, ripe tannin and beautiful length. It needs 7-8 years of cellaring to hit maturity and will have two to three decades of overall longevity.”

Clos de la Chapelle, Corton Bressandes Magnum, 2014

“The wine is dynamite, soaring from the glass in a blaze of red and black cherries, red currants, a touch of venison, coriander seed, a bit of bonfire, raw cocoa, stony soil tones and cedary wood. On the palate the wine is deep, fullbodied and nascently complex, with a very sappy core of fruit, lovely transparency, finegrained tannins and a very long, tangy and promising finish. Great juice in the making. 2025-2075.”
- John Gilman (95 points)

“Generous wood and menthol again suffuses the ripe and fresh nose that consists of dark cherry, earth, forest floor and soft sauvage nuances. There is really lovely delineation to the big-bodied and also overtly powerful flavors that possess a bit more refinement before concluding in a tautly muscular, focused and attractively textured finish that is serious but not really austere. This is even more structured than the Rognet and indisputably going to require an extended stay in a cool cellar. Patience!”

J-Lassalle-Cuvee-Angeline-Brut-Champagne-Magnum-2009

J. Lassalle, ''Cuvee Angeline'' Brut Champagne Magnum, 2009

Its name evokes sweetness and elegance, an invitation to dream. The mind wanders and discovers a deep emotion ».

The first vintage was created in 1973 by Jules Lassalle and launched in 1978, the same year as the birth of his granddaughter … Angeline.

Pale golden yellow color. On the first nose freshness and minerality are associated with a light fragance of licorice and fresh mint. After airing, more distinct fruity fragances of yellow fruits (apricot, quince) and pastry (almond praline) appear in a velvety sensation. On the palate a round and full texture brings body to the wine. Salinity highlights the taste until the finish and makes it more palatable: the signature of a fine gastronomic wine.

Albert-Bichot-Chablis-Moutonne-Grand-Cru-Domaine-Long-Depaquit-Magnum-2015

Albert Bichot, Chablis ''Moutonne'' Grand Cru Domaine Long-Depaquit Magnum, 2015

“Regarded almost as a Grand Cru in its own right, the Moutonne vineyard, wholly owned by Albert Bichot, is in a corner of the Vaudésir Grand Cru vineyard. In this sumptuous year, the wine is more generous, ripe yellow fruits than mineral texture. The acidity and the tangy aftertaste are a reminder that this is from cool-climate Chablis.”

Domaine-Bouchard-Pere-et-Fils-Corton-Charlemagne-Magnum-2016

Domaine Bouchard Pere et Fils, Corton Charlemagne Magnum, 2016

“The 2016 Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru comes from vines located just above Corton with east-facing orientation. It has an attractive, almost Meursault-like bouquet with traces of walnut and hazelnut. The palate is fresh and quite effervescent on the entry, with a fine line of acidity if not quite the persistence of the finest Corton-Charlemagne that I have tasted. Nonetheless, there is plenty of energy locked in here and it should age well.”

Beaux Freres, Pinot Noir ''Beaux Freres Vnyd'' (Willamette Valley) 3 Liter, 2016

“Pale to medium ruby-purple in color, the 2016 Pinot Noir Willamette Valley is scented of warm black cherries and notions of blueberry preserves with touches of clove and nutmeg plus dried leaves, blood orange peel and dusty earth. Light to medium-bodied, it has beautiful purity of warm black cherries and black berries in the mouth with spicy accents, a frame of very fine-grained tannins and wonderful juicy acidity, finishing very long and very spicy. 2,500 cases produced.”

Clos de la Chapelle, Volnay Taillepieds Double Magnum, 2014

Clos-de-la-Chapelle-Volnay-Taillepieds-Double-Magnum-2015

Clos de la Chapelle, Volnay Taillepieds Double Magnum, 2015

“As readers may recall, the Taillepieds here debuted in 2013, with the vines in this .47 hectare parcel averaging sixty-five years of age and lying between the rows of Domaines de Montille and Marquis d’Angerville. The 2015 Taillepieds is excellent and very pure in personality, with the bouquet wafting from the glass in a youthful blend of black cherries, cassis, incipient gamebird, lovely minerality, woodsmoke, a nice touch of stems and a very stylish base of lead pencilly new oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and superbly balanced, with a rock solid core of fruit, great soil signature, firm, fine-grained tannins, good acids and outstanding focus and grip on the long, complex and very, very promising finish. This may well prove to be the very finest expression of Taillepieds produced in Burgundy in 2015!”

Clos-Canarelli-Rose-Corse-Figari-Corsica-6-Liter-2016

Clos Canarelli, Rose Corse Figari (Corsica) 6 Liter, 2016

“Yves’s choice to convert the domaine to both organic and biodynamic viticulture has made it possible for his wines to display an unusual freshness, complexity, and aromatic intensity that others in Figari have been unable to achieve. In the cellar, Yves only uses indigenous yeasts, and prefers slow, deliberate, precise fermentations, and leaves his reds unfiltered.”

Olivier-Bernstein-Gevrey-Chambertin-Cazetiers-Magnum-2013

Olivier Bernstein, Gevrey-Chambertin ''Cazetiers'' Magnum, 2013

After working in a different vocation Olivier established a small vineyard in Roussillon which became much in demand with some of the top chefs in France.
In 2007, Olivier created the négociant house which bears his name and produces very small quantities of very high-quality premiers and grands crus exclusively. Olivier works closely with select growers of very old vines; he and his team manage the viticulture in each climat. In 2012, he was able to purchase — a wonderful opportunity and rare occurrence in Burgundy — the Mazi-Chambertin Grand Cru and Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Les Champeaux vines which he had been working with for several vintages.
His wines from Burgundy are always of top quality and are sought after by Burgundy fans all over the world.
