Big Bottles

Jeroboam, Rehoboam, Methuselah, Salmanazar, Balthazar and Nebuchadnezzar…we have them all! Not the Biblical Kings of course, but exceptionally fine wines in the ideal format! There is no better center piece at a table or in a cellar than one of these big bottles. Nothing says “party” like a Balthazar of wine. A Balthazar is 16x larger than a normal bottle…a 12-liter bottle! And why are these bottles named after the Biblical Kings you may ask? Well, no one really knows, but you can sure have some fun reading all the crazy stories.

Clos-de-la-Chapelle-Corton-Rognets-Imperial-2015

Clos de la Chapelle, Corton Rognets Imperial, 2015

“The 2015 Corton “Rognet” from Clos de la Chapelle is outstanding, offering up great purity to go with the depth, power and aging potential of the very best 2015s. Readers may recall that these fifty year-old vines lie just above those of Jean-Nicolas Meo on the slope in the heart of this lieu a dit, which lies alongside of Bressandes and Renardes. As deep as all of the top premier crus were here in 2015, there is an extra element of profundity evident in the Rognet, but one will have to be patient to enjoy this wine at its zenith. The very promising bouquet offers up scents of black cherries, dark berries, roasted venison, dark chocolate, a superb base of soil, woodsmoke and cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and tangy, with a rock solid core, impressive transparency, firm, ripe tannins, excellent focus and grip and a very long, poised and youthfully complex finish. This is going to be a long-distance runner par excellent, but once it is ready to drink, it is going to be pure magic."

Ulysses-Napa-Valley-by-Christian-Moueix-Double-Magnum-2012

Ulysses, (Napa Valley) by Christian Moueix Double Magnum, 2012

“The 2012 Ulysses (800 cases) is 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest other Bordeaux varietals. A structured, dense purple wine that displays plenty of cedar wood, crème de cassis, licorice and graphite, the wine is full-bodied, rich, backward and dense, but beautifully pure fruit and an almost Pontet-Canet-like purity and density are hallmarks of this brilliant wine. Forget it for 4-5 years and drink it over the following 20-25.” (93 pts) —Robert Parker

Clos-de-la-Chapelle-Corton-Bressandes-Imperial-2014

Clos de la Chapelle, Corton Bressandes Imperial, 2014

“The wine is dynamite, soaring from the glass in a blaze of red and black cherries, red currants, a touch of venison, coriander seed, a bit of bonfire, raw cocoa, stony soil tones and cedary wood. On the palate the wine is deep, fullbodied and nascently complex, with a very sappy core of fruit, lovely transparency, finegrained tannins and a very long, tangy and promising finish. Great juice in the making. 2025-2075.”
- John Gilman (95 points)

“Generous wood and menthol again suffuses the ripe and fresh nose that consists of dark cherry, earth, forest floor and soft sauvage nuances. There is really lovely delineation to the big-bodied and also overtly powerful flavors that possess a bit more refinement before concluding in a tautly muscular, focused and attractively textured finish that is serious but not really austere. This is even more structured than the Rognet and indisputably going to require an extended stay in a cool cellar. Patience!”

Quintarelli-Alzero-Magnum-2007

Quintarelli, Alzero Magnum, 2007

“A blend of 40% Cabernet Franc, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot, the 2007 Alzero is an Amarone-inspired red blend. The two Cabernet varieties undergo a three-month appassimento process and the Merlot is added at the last minute before bottling. This last grape adds a very evident layer of cherry sweetness and softness that goes a long way in defining this wine. Alzero has been in production since 1983 and no vintage has ever been skipped. This is a dark and brooding expression with a playful mix of sweet fruit intensity and dark tannic background shading.”

Grgich Hills, Cabernet Sauvignon Imperial, 2010

“A wine that offers a tight, focused beam of loamy earth, dried dark berry, cedar, anise and espresso. Features good length, with gripping tannins. Shows Grgich Hills at the top of its Cabernet game. Best from 2015 through 2026. 14,290 cases made.” (91 pts) -Wine Spectator

Clos-de-la-Chapelle-Corton-Bressandes-Imperial-2015

Clos de la Chapelle, Corton Bressandes Imperial, 2015

“The Bressandes from Domaine Clos de la Chapelle hails a twenty ares parcel of forty- five year-old vines. The 2015 Bressandes here is exceptional, offering up a deep, pure and nicely reserved bouquet of dark berries, black cherries, bitter chocolate, gamebird, a beautifully refined base of soil tones, woodsmoke, a touch of fresh nutmeg, hints of coriander seed and a deft framing of new oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and shows off stunning mid- palate depth, with great purity to the perfectly ripe fruit, suave, fine-grained tannins, good acids and outstanding focus and grip on the very, very long, youthfully complex and beautifully balanced finish. This will be a great, great wine in the fullness of time.” – John Gilman, View from the Cellar (95+ points)

La-Jota-Cabernet-Sauvignon-Howell-Mt-Imperial-2012

La Jota, Cabernet Sauvignon (Howell Mt.) Imperial , 2012

“The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the more complete, well-rounded wines in the La Jota range. Dark red and black cherry, plum, spice, new leather, smoke and licorice are some of the notes that wrap around the palate. The 2012 is dark, voluptuous and juicy, all signatures of the year. In 2012, the blend is 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc, 8% Petit Verdot and 4% Merlot.” (92 pts) -Vinous

Silver-Oak-Cabernet-Sauvignon-Alexander-Valley-Imperial-2014

Silver Oak, Cabernet Sauvignon (Alexander Valley) Imperial, 2014

Our 2014 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has a garnet color with a ruby red rim and bluish tint. It has an alluring nose of chocolate-covered strawberries, vanilla, nutmeg, truffle and sage. On the palate, it has a broad yet delicate entry and offers cranberry flavors. These flavors are complemented by raspberry and pluot with savory black olive characters on the mid-palate. The wine finishes with silky tannins, cedar and bramble flavors with excellent length and return. This wine is drinkable upon release, but given proper cellaring conditions can be enjoyed through 2038.-Winery Notes

Domaine-Bouchard-Chevalier-Montrachet-La-Cabotte-Magnum-2009

Domaine Bouchard Pere et Fils, Chevalier-Montrachet ''La Cabotte'' Magnum, 2009

“This is slightly riper than the straight Chevalier with a similar nose but with more yellow fruit and spice influence that is followed by rich, serious, broad-shouldered and intensely stony flavors that possess a positively gorgeous sense of underlying tension that adds energy to the massive, explosive, long and palate staining finish. This is a big yet impeccably well-balanced wine that should age for years.”

“Good deep, dark red. Deep, multifaceted aromas of dark cherry, blueberry, menthol, violet, brown spices, licorice and cardamom. Plush, sweet and spicy, with a distinctly wild quality to the blueberry and huckleberry flavors accented by peppery herbs. Youthfully imploded Bonnes-Mares, with a tight, powerful finish that calls for patience. Superb.” (94 pts) -Vinous

Eisele-Vineyard-Cabernet-Sauvignon-Magnum-2014

Eisele Vineyard, Cabernet Sauvignon Magnum, 2014

“Intensely scented dried flowers on the nose in the rose to lilac spectrum. Raspberry and blackberry undertones. Rose perfumes. It’s full-bodied, yet everything’s in finesse. Superfine tannins coat your palate and give you incredible length, and it all last for minutes on the palate. Great resonance. Not the power of 2013 but intellect and persistence prevails here. A joy to taste now, but this will improve for decades ahead.” – James Suckling (99 points)

Amapola-Creek-Cabernet-Sauvignon-Imperial-Magnum-Sonoma-2007

Amapola Creek, Cabernet Sauvignon Imperial (Sonoma), 2007

Amapola Creek Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 is a blend of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petite Verdot aged for 25 months in new and seasoned French and American oak barrels. This elegant Sonoma red offers rich aromas of dark cherry and blackberry fruit, licorice, vanilla and oak on the nose. On the palate, concentrated, layered flavors of black fruits and dark chocolate with firm tannins and a long, lingering finish.

“Complex aromas of dried cherry, licorice, tobacco and aged beef, plus a subtle smoky nuance. Sappy and creamy in texture, offering intense dark fruit flavors that gain power and spiciness with aeration. Shows bitter cherry pit and smoked meat notes on the back end, finishing with very good breadth and sweetness.” -Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar (90 Points)

Groth, Cabernet Sauvignon Imperial, 2011

“Bright ruby-red. Slightly medicinal aromas of cassis, blackberry, licorice and herbs. Supple, sweet and easygoing, with dark berry and dark chocolate flavors dominating. My enthusiasm was muted by slightly green, dusty tannins and a touch of bitterness on the back.” -Vinous
