Big Bottles

Jeroboam, Rehoboam, Methuselah, Salmanazar, Balthazar and Nebuchadnezzar…we have them all! Not the Biblical Kings of course, but exceptionally fine wines in the ideal format! There is no better center piece at a table or in a cellar than one of these big bottles. Nothing says “party” like a Balthazar of wine. A Balthazar is 16x larger than a normal bottle…a 12-liter bottle! And why are these bottles named after the Biblical Kings you may ask? Well, no one really knows, but you can sure have some fun reading all the crazy stories.

Croft-Vintage-Port-Magnum-2016

Croft, Vintage Port Magnum, 2016

“The 2016 Vintage Port is a field blend that was set to be bottled about a week after this tasting. It was the final blend, aged for 20 months in wood. It comes in with 104 grams of residual sugar. Tight, powerful and very intense, this is a big boy with the firmness you expect from fine Vintage Port, although the Fonseca is even more powerful. Showing good concentration and a fresh, lifted finish too, this is impressive at the outset.”

Fonseca-Vintage-Port-Magnum-2016

Fonseca, Vintage Port Magnum, 2016

“The 2016 Vintage Port is a field blend that was not quite bottled when seen (set for a week later), but it was the final blend. It was aged for 20 months in wood and comes in with 99 grams of residual sugar. This Fonseca is remarkably expressive, lifted and gloriously fresh. It has good concentration but some years have had more and seemed sexier. However, the most notable feature is the structure. It is very impressive in structure, that classic Port power and firmness coming to the fore and overshadowing the rest at the moment.”

Clos-de-la-Chapelle-Corton-Bressandes-1er-Cru-Imperial-2016

Clos de la Chapelle, Corton ''Bressandes'' Grand Cru Imperial, 2016

“In contrast to the wood regimen of all of the prior wines, this is the only one where I would not describe it as subtle, indeed it fights somewhat with the otherwise well-layered, ripe and fresh aromas of red cherry, earth and underbrush. There is excellent size, weight and richness to the broad-shouldered flavors that, like the Taillepieds, are lush and opulent yet the supporting tannic spine shaping the beautifully long finish again makes it clear that this will need a long snooze in a cool cellar. Note that there is such good underlying material that I am not concerned about the oak ultimately successfully integrating.”

Clos-de-la-Chapelle-Corton-Bressandes-1er-Cru-Magnum-2016

Clos de la Chapelle, Corton ''Bressandes'' Grand Cru Magnum, 2016

“This is another outstanding wine in the making, offering up a deep and very pure bouquet of red and black cherries, a complex base of stony minerality, coffee, venison, raw cocoa, woodsmoke and cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and sappy at the core, with great backend mineral drive, ripe, suave tannins and superb length and grip on the focused and utterly classic finish. 2028-2075+.”

Dom-Perignon-Rose-Magnum-2004

Dom Perignon, Rose Magnum, 2004

“The fascinatingly copper-colored 2004 Dom Pérignon Rosé has a beautifully delicate bouquet of red fruits, and indicates a great purity and freshness. Kept on the lees for at least nine years to smooth the tannins the 2004 reveals a weightless power on the palate. It has a deep and concentrated, highly elegant Pinot character (though Chardonnay and Pinot are more or less 50/50), and is full of finesse and freshness. The 2004 is intense and vinous, yet pure, precise and extremely fine. Adorable.”

Robert-Mondavi-Cabernet-Sauvignon-Reserve-Napa-Double-Magnum-1987

Robert Mondavi, Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve (Napa) Double Magnum, 1987

“This extraordinary wine is backward and unevolved, but even neophytes will recognize its potential greatness. The opaque, saturated, dark purple color reveals no sign of age. The huge, smoky, oaky, blackcurrant, herb, and vanillin-scented nose only hints at what will be achieved with further evolution. Sweet, decadently rich, dense, highly extracted flavors are wrapped around a full-bodied, chewy, super-concentrated, moderately tannic wine that, ideally, needs 7-8 more years of cellaring. It is a 25 to 30 year California Cabernet Sauvignon that is just beginning to become civilized. A potential legend in the making!

Guy-Breton-Morgon-6-Liter-2015

Guy Breton, Morgon 6 Liter, 2015

“Limpid violet. A seductively perfumed bouquet evokes fresh red berries, Asian spices and potpourri, and subtle cola and licorice nuances emerge with aeration. Juicy and pure on the palate, offering intense raspberry, lavender pastille and spicecake flavors and a refreshingly bitter touch of blood orange. Delivers a serious payload of vibrant berry and spice character without excess weight, and finishes extremely long and nervy, displaying no rough edges and lingering florality.”

Clos-de-la-Chapelle-Pommard-Grands-Epenots-1er-Cru-Magnum-2016

Clos de la Chapelle, Pommard ''Grands Epenots'' 1er Cru Magnum, 2016

“The 2016 Grands Epenots from Domaine de la Chapelle is also a stellar young wine. The aromatic constellation delivers scents of red and black cherries, pigeon, woodsmoke, a very complex base of soil, espresso and cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and potentially very, very complex, with a rock solid core, fine-grained tannins, outstanding focus and balance and a long, youthful and elegant finish. This is every bit as refined in profile as the Chanlins old vine bottling, and will probably just edge it out by a nose over their long lives in bottle. Simply great Pommard in the making! 2028-2065.”
- John Gilman (94+ points)

“Here too there is enough wood to notice along with hints of menthol framing the overtly earthy and agreeably fresh aromas of black raspberry and cassis. The generously proportioned and fleshy big-bodied flavors possess excellent volume thanks to the abundant level of dry extract, all wrapped in a markedly structured, austere and backward finale. This is terrific but note well that it will not make for especially inviting early drinking.”
