Big Bottles

Jeroboam, Rehoboam, Methuselah, Salmanazar, Balthazar and Nebuchadnezzar…we have them all! Not the Biblical Kings of course, but exceptionally fine wines in the ideal format! There is no better center piece at a table or in a cellar than one of these big bottles. Nothing says “party” like a Balthazar of wine. A Balthazar is 16x larger than a normal bottle…a 12-liter bottle! And why are these bottles named after the Biblical Kings you may ask? Well, no one really knows, but you can sure have some fun reading all the crazy stories.

Domaine-du-Pegau-Chateauneuf-du-Pape-Cuvee-da-Capo-Imperial-2010

Domaine du Pegau, Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee da Capo Imperial, 2010

“Comprised of roughly 85% Grenache and the rest Syrah and other permitted varieties, aged all in foudre, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee da Capo is sheer perfection in a glass. Wine doesn’t get any better. Incredibly rich and concentrated, yet ethereal and even graceful, it boasts off-the-hook aromas of blackberry, licorice, spice-box, smoked meats and underbrush that continue to change and develop in the glass. Massive and decadent on the palate, yet again, with no weight and a seamless texture, this brilliant effort needs a handful of years in the cellar and will live to see its 30th birthday in fine form.”

Joseph-Drouhin-Beaune-Clos-des-Mouches-Rouge-45L-1976

Joseph Drouhin, Beaune ''Clos des Mouches'' Rouge 4.5L, 1976

“Unusually fresh and relatively bright aromas in the context of where the vast majority of ‘76s are today, even from larger format bottles, with spicy red and black fruit, sous-bois and earth hints that introduce rich, delicious and still vibrant medium full flavors underpinned by firm but integrated tannins on the long if ever-so-slightly drying finish. This is highly complex and drinking perfectly now and though it will hold for another 50 years in this format, I can’t see any further improvement. A first rate example of the vintage.”

Vega-Sicilia-Unico-Artist-Label-Double-Magnum-2007

Vega Sicilia, Unico Artist Label Double Magnum, 2007

“2007 was a cold vintage in Ribera and it produced lighter, fresher wines (perhaps not as problematic as 2008, but there was also frost in 2007). The wine might be a tad lighter than other vintages, but it’s more structured than 2008; it combines elegance and power, is nicely balanced and should be able to develop in bottle for many years”
- Wine Advocate (95 points)

“This harmonious red is balanced and deep, offering ripe plum and currant flavors, with black pepper, tobacco, licorice and mineral accents. Delivers plenty of structure, with well-integrated tannins and lively acidity. The wine remains graceful through the long, spicy finish. Drink now through 2027."
Wine Spectator (94 points)

“Vivid ruby-red. Spice- and mineral-accented redcurrant, cherry, cured tobacco and candied rose on the highly perfumed nose. A juicy, sharply focused midweight offering lively red fruit and floral pastille flavors and earthy suggestions of chewing tobacco and succulent herbs. In a graceful, energetic style (due to the cool vintage, no doubt), with strong finishing cut, resonating floral character and velvety tannins coming in late to add shape and grip. A successful wine for the vintage, no question.”

Mouton-Rothschild-Pauillac-Imperial-2013

Mouton Rothschild, (Pauillac) Imperial, 2013

“The 2013 Mouton-Rothschild has a conservative, straight-laced, tobacco-stained bouquet, nicely defined but lacking genuine depth. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, balanced with tobacco and red berry fruit, moderate depth with touches of dried herbs lining the finish. I can imagine this becoming approachable within a couple of years and yet the pedigree of the terroir percolates through with aeration. While not a great Mouton-Rothschild by any stretch of the imagination, this is a strong effort in a difficult vintage.”

Ausone-St-Emilion-Imperial-2012

Ausone, (St.-Emilion) Imperial, 2012

“One can’t say enough about the amazing job that Alain Vauthier and his daughter have done at this historic property on the decomposed limestone slopes of St.-Emilion. Not surprisingly, the 2012 Ausone is one of the candidates for the wine of the vintage. Inky purple in color, with notes of crushed rocks, spring flowers and blueberry and black raspberry, the wine grows on the palate, offering up amazing concentration. There is no heaviness or cloying characteristics. Pure, rich, full-bodied and, although accessible, it is capable of lasting 30 or more years. This will be one of the profound 2012s, following what Haut Brion and Mission Haut Brion did in Pessac-Léognan. Drink it 2022-2050+.”

Ausone-St-Emilion-Magnum-2005

Ausone, (St.-Emilion) Magnum, 2005

“A tiny production of just over 1,300 cases will make the 2005 Ausone impossible to find, but proprietor Alain Vauthier continues to exhibit the Midas touch with his perfectionist efforts at this estate. This brilliant, blue/black-hued offering reveals an extraordinarily youthful, but promising nose of incense, blueberries, blackberries, currants, licorice, and crushed rocks. This intense 2005 boasts powerful, super-layered, multidimensional flavors with tremendous extraction, yet they come across as incredibly sublime, even delicate for such a stunningly concentrated, full-bodied effort. A masterpiece of concentration and balance, it will no doubt be drinking well a century from now. Anticipated maturity: 2030-2080+.”

To make this blend of 75% Corvina Veronese, 20% Rondinella and 5% Molinara, the grapes are harvested and then dried in a well-ventilated room until January. Deep purple in color with a bouquet full of dried fruit. Amarone is an extremely important wine in Italian viticulture as it is unique to the Valpolicella region.

Margaux-Margaux-Imperial-2010

Margaux, (Margaux) Imperial, 2010

“…This blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc (representing only 38% of the total production) has the classic, quintessential Margaux character of spring flowers, almost cool-climate precision, medium body, and a seamless integration of tannin, wood and alcohol. The blue and black fruit characteristics are present, and the wine restrained. The most measured and polished of all the first growths I tasted, it is also less concentrated than any of the other first growths, but the elegance is classic. This is one of the few first growths of 2010 where the tannins are remarkably delicate and sweet, and the softness of this wine will provide magical drinking at a relatively early age, yet its balance and concentration will carry it for 20 or more years.”

Margaux-Margaux-Imperial-2005

Margaux, (Margaux) Imperial, 2005

“Another celestial effort from Paul Pontallier and Corinne Mentzelopoulos, the 2005 Margaux, a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot, boasts a dense opaque blue/purple color as well as an extraordinary bouquet of spring flowers, blueberries, black raspberries, creme de cassis, licorice, and, despite its having spent two years in 100% new wood, only a subtle touch of toasty oak. Although full-bodied, the wine seems light on its feet because of the silky tannins as well as the great gravel terroir from which it comes. Beautiful purity, length, and nobility define this modern day classic. Is it better than the 2000, 1996, 1990, or some of the vintages from the decade of the eighties? Who knows, but it is unquestionably one of the all-time great wines made at Chateau Margaux.”

Palmer, (Margaux) 18-Liter (Melchoir), 1998

“Very deep garnet colour. Smokey / spicy aromas with some sweaty saddles, cloves and white pepper complimenting the core of warm cassis. The medium+ bodied wine is quite muscular with concentrated, somewhat masculine / savoury fruit juxtaposed by the elegance of structure. Medium to firm very fine tannins and medium+ acidity. Long finish.”

Petrus-Pomerol-Imperial-2010

Petrus, (Pomerol) Imperial, 2010

“The harvest at Petrus took place between September 27 and October 12, and the 2010 finished at 14.1% natural alcohol, which is slightly lower than the 2009’s 14.5%. The 2010 reminds me somewhat of the pre-1975 vintages of Petrus, a monster-in-the-making, with loads of mulberry, coffee, licorice and black cherry notes with an overlay of enormous amounts of glycerin and depth. Stunningly rich, full-bodied and more tannic and classic than the 2009, this is an awesome Petrus, but probably needs to be forgotten for 8-10 years. It should last at least another 50 or more.”
