Big Bottles

Jeroboam, Rehoboam, Methuselah, Salmanazar, Balthazar and Nebuchadnezzar…we have them all! Not the Biblical Kings of course, but exceptionally fine wines in the ideal format! There is no better center piece at a table or in a cellar than one of these big bottles. Nothing says “party” like a Balthazar of wine. A Balthazar is 16x larger than a normal bottle…a 12-liter bottle! And why are these bottles named after the Biblical Kings you may ask? Well, no one really knows, but you can sure have some fun reading all the crazy stories.

Christian-Moreau-Chablis-Clos-des-Hospice-Double-Magnum-2012

Christian Moreau, Chablis ''Clos des Hospice'' Double Magnum, 2012

“This wine was tasted blind at the Burgundy 2012 tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Chablis Grand Cru les Clos des Hospices has a complex bouquet with potent flint and smoke aromas that are very well delineated. The palate is fresh and poised, and there is superb tension here and focus; it is backward but with great precision and penetration on the finish that sticks in the memory. This is just a wonderful, effervescent, tensile Chablis Grand Cru.” – Wine Advocate (93 points)

Pavillon-Blanc-du-Chateau-Margaux-Bordeaux-Blanc-Magnum-2013

Pavillon Blanc du Chateau Margaux, (Margaux) Magnum, 2013

Magnum

“Already in bottle, the 2013 Pavillon Blanc du Chateau Margaux (100% Sauvignon Blanc) reveals stunning notes of honeyed grapefruit, lemon zest and a hint of tropical fruit in a medium-bodied, crisp, fresh, lively style. Despite being fermented and aged in wood, the oak component is pushed to the background. The wine shows terrific acidity, purity and personality. Drink it over the next decade or more.” —Robert Parker 92pts August 2014

Hubert-Lamy-Saint-Aubin-Blanc-Clos-de-la-Chantiere-1er-Cru-Double-Magnum-2015

Hubert Lamy, Saint Aubin Blanc ''Clos de la Chantiere'' 1er Cru Double Magnum, 2015

DOUBLE MAGNUM FORMAT
The 2015 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Clos de la Chatenière comes from vines on hard limestone and some parts suffered some hydric stress, according to Olivier Lamy. It has a rather austere bouquet at the moment with reluctant flint and smoky scents developing in the glass. The palate is fresh and crisp on the entry with good acidity, linear and correct, again more austere than Olivier Lamy’s other crus in 2015, with a saline finish. It has just been sulfured, so I expect it will develop more fruité by the time of bottling. Good potential here.

Hubert-Lamy-Saint-Aubin-Blanc-En-Remilly-1er-Cru-Double-Magnum-2015

Hubert Lamy, Saint Aubin Blanc ''En Remilly'' 1er Cru Double Magnum, 2015

Double Magnum Format Equivalent to 4 Regular Bottles
The 2015 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru en Remilly, from two parcels (one has more energy than the other) has a clean and precise, quite minerally bouquet with apple blossom and freshly sliced pear notes. It takes some coaxing from the glass. The palate is vibrant on the entry. There is great energy here, you can feel it fizzing through the tongue, well defined and tensile right to the finish. Excellent – I expect this to land towards the upper end of my banded score once in bottle.

Paul-Jaboulet-Aine-Hermitage-Blanc-La-Chapelle-Magnum-2010

Paul Jaboulet Aine, Hermitage Blanc ''La Chapelle'' Magnum, 2010

“The 2010 Hermitage La Chapelle Blanc is 100% Marsanne from the vineyard known as Maison Blanche situated at the top of the Hermitage appellation, above the famed lieu-dit for white Hermitage, Les Rocoules. This cuvee is very limited in availability so I’ll keep my notes brief. Aromas of white currants, pepper, quince and apricot marmalade are present in this full-bodied, gorgeously rich, pure, stunning white. It will unquestionably be a very long-lived white wine.”

Castello-di-Neive-Barbaresco-Santo-Stefano-Albesani-Riserva-Double-Magnum-2004

Castello di Neive, Barbaresco Santo Stefano Albesani Riserva Double Magnum, 2004

The 2004 Barbaresco Riserva Santo Stefano shows attractive inner perfume in a medium-bodied, accessible style. This is a surprisingly soft vintage for the Santo Stefano Riserva and the wine shows slight elements of dilution that suggest yields may have been a touch too high. Though still a delicious Barbaresco, the 2004 Riserva Santo Stefano could have been so much more than that. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2019.

Clos-de-la-Chapelle-Corton-Charlemagne-Double-Magnum-2015

Clos de la Chapelle, Corton Charlemagne Double Magnum, 2015

“Having vines on the Pernand side of the hill of Corton must have been an advantage in the hot summer of 2015, and the Clos de la Chapelle version in this vintage has turned out beautifully as a result. This is 13.5 percent alcohol in 2015 (all natural) and the wine is impeccably balanced and drinking with loads of personality out of the blocks. The superb bouquet wafts from the glass in a classic blend of pear, apple, a touch of iodine, stony soil tones, spring flowers, hazelnuts and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and nicely broad-shouldered in style, with excellent concentration at the core, fine soil signature, bright acids and impressive length and grip on the nascently complex and perfectly balanced finish. This is very delicious in its wide open youth, but really could do with at least a couple of years in the cellar to allow its secondary layers of complexity to start to emerge.” – John Gilman, View from the Cellar (93+ Points)

Moet & Chandon, Ice Imperial NV Double Magnum

Moët & Chandon introduces Moët Ice Impérial, the world’s first Champagne specifically created to be enjoyed on ice during the day in warmer or cooler weather. Moët Ice Impérial’s Champagne blend was expertly developed in France by Chef de Cave Benoît Gouez from the House’s signature crus to intensify the taste experience of icy freshness and powerful aromas of tropical fruits. It draws its fruitiness from tropical notes with an original flavor twist of red berries and its freshness from a select proportion of Chardonnay grapes to ensure crispness and thirst-quenching sensation.

Lanson-Vintage-Collection-Magnum-1988

Lanson, Vintage Collection Magnum, 1988

94 points John Gilman (View From the Cellar)

“The 1988 Lanson Vintage Collection bottling is really singing at the present time, with the beautiful nose showing just a bit more complexity and vibrancy than the very, very good 1990 version that preceded it at our tasting. The nose jumps from the glass in a blaze of apple, orange zest, pear, superb minerality, plenty of smokiness and a nice touch of sea salts in the upper register. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and still very racy in profile, with a rock solid core, lovely focus and grip, pinpoint bubbles and a very long, complex and seamless finish. The 1988 Lanson is now drinking beautifully out of magnum, but it is still early days for this wine and it may yet improve with further bottle age. 2016-2050.”
