This is a sophisticated, harmonious blend of three great vineyards from two appellations in Santa Barbara County: Solomon Hills Vineyard from Santa Maria Valley blends beautifully with John Sebastiano and Zotovich Vineyards from Sta. Rita Hills. Each vineyard brings to this blend nuances of its appellation. Santa Maria Valley shows through in the fragrant and perfumed nose with a touch of spice, while Sta. Rita Hills brings additional structure, weight, and power. This Pinot Noir is very versatile and will pair with and enhance a variety of cuisines. Particularly good pairings include roast chicken, grilled salmon, Santa Maria-style tri-tip, and mushroom & prosciutto pizza. Aged for 13 months in French oak barrels, 40% of which were new.

A Total Showstopper!

Paul Lato’s wines are famous among Pinot-obsessed collectors, aficionados and sommeliers everywhere. Famous for his intuitive touch with the notoriously finicky Pinot Noir grape, his small-lot, handcrafted Pinots caught the attention of Robert Parker back in 2002 when Lato was still honing his craft and making only a handful of barrels. Later, a fortuitous call from Thomas Keller to feature his wines at French Laundry was further proof that he was on the right track.  Over time, he quietly gained a reputation as a fine winemaker, slowly increasing his production and gaining access to better vineyard sites throughout California’s Central Coast. Today he makes wines of the highest caliber, not only from the best vineyards, but the best blocks within each vineyard. If you’ve not tried the Paul Lato wines, this “Matinee” bottling is an excellent introduction. It has all the trappings of the higher-end bottlings, but just like catching an afternoon showing at the cinema rather than evening, it is half the price. A sophisticated, harmonious blend of three great vineyards from two appellations in Santa Barbara County, each vineyard brings to this blend nuances of its appellation. You’ll find plenty of wild bramble fruit, a touch of smoky gunpowder and tilled earth undertones. On the palate it is a complex interplay of earthy, dark fruit tones alongside lifted red fruit elements, and anchored by a satin seamlessness that is simply irresistible. Rarely seen in retail, these limited-distribution, boutique wines are more commonly found on wine lists at top restaurants. There is a lot of wine here for the price – like that film you’ve been dying to see at the theater, when it’s gone it’s gone – so don’t miss out!
