"It was only natural that we would make a Pinot Noir in addition to Chardonnay. The Santa Lucia Highlands is well-known as the perfect home for both these varietals. Grapes ripen slowly, enabling us to make wine of heightened complexity, with layers of aromas and flavors. We named Mer Soleil after the two forces of nature – the sea and sun – that shape this singular character, and they are every bit as powerful in creating our Pinot as our Chardonnay."

A Pinot With Power

Over 30 years ago the Wagner family, of Caymus Vineyards, Belle Glos and Meiomi fame, were drawn to the Santa Lucia Highlands to make great Chardonnay. Inspired by the remarkable landscape and character of the Santa Lucia Highlands (often abbreviated to “SLH” on wine labels), winemaker Charlie Wagner knew it was only a matter of time before he got the itch to grow Pinot Noir, too. Here in this dramatic landscape, where vineyards are perched on east-facing terraces of the Santa Lucia mountain range, the weather shifts throughout the course of the day: morning fog burns off with bright sunshine and cool, afternoon breezes kick up from the Monterey Bay to chill everything down. This growing environment allows Pinot Noir to hang on the vine an abnormally long amount of time, which leads to super slow ripening and serious structure. The result is a hedonistic style of Pinot Noir with loads of upfront, silky fruit and toasty oak notes from French barrel ageing. It has the color of dark plums and a nose of ripe cherry, blueberry, toasted wood and a powdery whiff of cocoa. On the palate, flavors of cherry cobbler mingle with hints of star anise, cola and a touch of campfire smoke. This is a generously-fruited, big style wine for those who enjoy their Pinot with power.
