California’s Up and Coming Region
Santa Rita Hills might be a new name for most wine lovers, but this appellation is one to watch. Quickly becoming one of the hottest up-and-coming areas for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, it only came into existence in 2001. Located on California’s Central Coast in Santa Barbara County, it is the area’s cool climate, influence from the Pacific Ocean and calcareous rock that makes it so agreeable to the Chardonnay grape. When Ron Melville and his sons decided to develop their estate vineyards and winery, they recognized the importance of distinguishing this unique area within the valley. As such, the Melville family was heavily involved in the creation of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA. In the glass, you’re greeted by a pale gold color and aromas of pineapple, white peach and toasty hazelnut. On the palate it is richly textured with flavors of lime zest, acacia flowers and delicate white peach, all lifted by balanced acidity. Drinking well above its price point, this Chardonnay can rival some of its more famous neighbors – in short, there’s a whole lot to love for the price!
