Clos-de-la-Chapelle-Volnay-Clos-de-la-Chapelle-1er-Cru-2016

Clos de la Chapelle, Volnay ''Clos de la Chapelle'' 1er Cru, 2016

“This is, to my palate, the single finest vintage of this monopole that the domaine has yet produced! The great nose soars from the glass in a sappy blend of cassis, sweet dark berries, pigeon, raw cocoa, a touch of currant leaf, a gorgeous base of soil tones and just a hint of new oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and shows superb mid-palate depth, with a very elegant and suave attack, lovely backend mineral drive, fine-grained tannins and a long, vibrant and very complex finish. This is a great young bottle of Volnay! 2026-2075.”
- John Gilman (94+ points)

“Ruby and garnet hues. An elegant bouquet, with aromas of very ripe berries and baking spices with a floral background. Lovely fullness on the palate, a supple and generous wine. Good tannic structure, with finesse and silkiness. A generous and long finish.”

Clos-de-la-Chapelle-Volnay-En-Carelle-1er-Cru-2016

Clos de la Chapelle, Volnay ''En Carelle'' 1er Cru, 2016

“The bouquet is deep, pure and nicely black fruity in personality, offering up a refined blend of cassis, black plum, bitter chocolate, dark soil tones, venison, a touch of cedar and a lovely topnote of currant leaf. On the palate the wine is transparent, focused, full- bodied and nicely sappy at the core, with suave tannins, excellent balance and a long, nascently complex and elegant finish. All this lovely bottle of Volnay will need is a bit of time in the cellar to blossom. 2026-2060.”
- John Gilman (91+ points)

“Here the reduction isn’t subtle and while it may well dissipate in time, if you’re going to crack a bottle soon it will help to give it a thorough aeration first. Otherwise there is a lacy, indeed almost delicate mouth feel to the energetic and stony flavors that deliver fine length on the balanced finish. Once again my rating implicitly assumes that the nose will recover with time in bottle.”

Quintada-da-Boavista-Oratorio-2013

Quintada da Boavista, Oratorio, 2013

“The 2013 Vinha do Oratório Vinhas Velhas (Quinta da Boavista) is a field blend from a single vineyard planted in 1930, aged for 18 months in new French oak (co-owner Tony Smith implied that will change—but at the moment, since this is their first harvest, new oak is all they have, he said). He added that this “contains some of the highest terraces in the Douro – some measuring over 8 meters tall.” It comes in at 13.5% alcohol. After acquiring this Quinta from Sogrape recently, Lima & Smith clearly intend to make a statement with the terroir. Crisp and fresh, this has big power and old-school mid-palate finesse. Laced with dark flavors, plums and blue fruit, this has fine grip on the finish, but it is just a bit too tight to approach now. It seems to have a bright future—almost as bright as the wine’s demeanor—but it is wholly unevolved. I’m leaning up for its potential, but it is all about the potential just now. This should hit the USA market around now, when this article appears, or not long after. There were a bit less than 1,000 bottles produced."

Quintada-da-Boavista-Ujo-2013

Quintada da Boavista, Ujo, 2013

“The 2013 Vinha do Ujo Vinhas Velhas (Quinta da Boavista) is another of the winery’s field blends sourced from a 1930 vineyard. Aged for 16 months in new French oak, it comes in at just 13% alcohol. All field work is done by hand or horse or mule. The rustic terracing faces directly North. We estimate that the Ujo, which is Douro slang for an Eagle Owl, contains 25 or more native varieties of grapes.” It is wonderful. It is hard not to take special notice here when this Ujo simply coats the palate. Intensely flavored (admittedly, a bit too much of that is from oak just now; it will hopefully show a lot better around 2021), it has the structure and class to remain serious. There isn’t a track record with this—it is newly acquired by the producer and this is their first harvest—so let’s be a bit conservative and see how it pulls itself together. Both single-vineyard wines have room to improve in the cellar. Assuming this pulls in a good chunk of the wood over the next five to seven years, it should meet my expectations. It will be pretty good even if it doesn’t wholly succeed in that regard. There were less than 1,000 bottles produced, which no doubt accounts for the price point to a considerable extent."

Newton-Vineyard-Cabernet-Sauvignon-Mt-Veeder-2014

Newton Vineyard, Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder, 2014

“Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder has notes of freshly crushed red and black currants and mulberries over hints of pencil shavings, red roses and menthol plus a touch of Chinese five spice. Medium to full-bodied with a very firm frame of grainy tannins and plenty of freshness, it fills the palate with red and black fruits, with loads of earthy layers coming through on the long finish.”
