Joseph-Drouhin-Griotte-Chambertin-2013

Joseph Drouhin, Griotte Chambertin, 2013

“The 2013 Griotte-Chambertin was cropped on October 8, partial whole-cluster with a 23-day maceration, and will spend slightly longer in oak. It was a small harvest of only three barrels (18 hectoliters per hectare). This sample had not been racked. It has an exuberant, almost Bonnes-Mares-like bouquet with small black cherries, blueberry, truffle and attractive chalky scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a very sensual entry, the oak a little conspicuous at the moment, but that will be subsumed with time. Plush and luxuriant, try to resist this for several years after bottling. This is “killer juice” (not a technical term) from Drouhin." (94-96 pts) – Robert Parker

LEvangile-Pomerol-2013

L'Evangile, (Pomerol), 2013

The 2013 l’Evangile shows a slightly deeper color as well as more noticeable ripe raspberry and black cherry fruit intermixed with notions of licorice and incense. Again, there is no hint of herbaceousness or tannic astringency in this mid-weight, slightly superficial, but charming, pretty 2013. Consume it over the next 7-8 years.

Bodega-Numanthia-Termes-Toro-Termanthia-2009

Bodega Numanthia, Termes Toro Termanthia, 2009

From Bodega Numanthia, the 2009 Termanthia is entirely hand crafted and aged in French oak barrels. A brilliant deep purple in color, this elegant Tuscan red offers an incredibly layered and sophisticated bouquet of berry fruit, floral notes and hints of black pepper, almonds, spice, vanilla and truffles on the nose. On the palate, great complexity with concentrated fruit, floral, chocolate and spice character with a velvety mouthfeel, silky tannins and outstanding structure and balance with a long finish.

“The 2009 Termanthia has a fragrant bouquet of dark berries, mulberry, juniper and lavender, with vanilla-tinged notes emanating from the oak. The palate is full-bodied with firm but quite fine tannins, plus a fine sense of symmetry. It is very sweet with plenty of candied orange peel and even a hint of molasses towards the succulent, fleshy, slightly spicy finish. This is sleek and sensual and deserves five years, perhaps more, in the cellar.” -Wine Advocate (95 Points)

“This powerful red shows structure and grace, with massive tannins supporting ripe fruit braced by lively acidity and plenty of oak. Plum, cassis, black pepper, anise and mineral notes mingle in a sleek, firm texture. A big wine in the modern style.” -Wine Spectator (94 Points)

Bodega Numanthia, Termes Toro Termanthia , 2012

“Dense and polished, this red is muscular yet balanced, with firm, well-integrated tannins and lively acidity supporting rich flavors of blackberry, cocoa, licorice and mineral. Monolithic now, but has real depth.” – Wine Spectator (95 Points)

Quinto-do-Noval-Nacional-Vintage-Port-2004-2004

Quinto do Noval, Nacional Vintage Port, 2004

“The 2004 Vintage Port “Nacional” is a declared Vintage Port aged for 18 months in wooden casks. An old vines field blend, it comes in at just 79 grams per liter of residual sugar, rather dry on paper and in perception. Typically graceful and leaning on elegance in the mid-palate, it is laced with some herbs and rhubarb up front. It is very aromatic and it opens with a distinctive flavor profile compared to others in the Vintage Port lineup that I had open. In the mid-palate, it seems like a very fine table wine in some ways, showing remarkable finesse and focus, and a rather dry finish. It is completely closed and gives little. The structure and the underlying concentration are all obvious, though. They are classic and they make this a cellar candidate from the get-go. Despite being over a decade old, this is tight, firm, powerful and too young. After playing around with it for several days, I saw it finally begin to blossom, to show fresh fruit and something besides austerity. By the end of the week, it was far more evolved, showing its wonderful concentration, increasingly interesting intensity of flavor and a long finish. It is never obvious, but it is always quite gorgeous. This is an old school Port on an old school schedule. It needs cellaring. If extended aeration makes it at least a bit approachable, it is not exactly showing all it has and all it can be. Be patient—even if it is more approachable in a decade or so, that won’t be even close to its peak. If you’re patient and young, give it a try around 2040." —The Wine Advocate

Faiveley-Batard-Montrachet-2013

Faiveley, Batard Montrachet, 2013

“This is also attractively pure and airy, indeed this is unusually elegant for the appellation with its slightly more expressive nose of white flower, citrus, pear and light spice hints that is framed by a touch of wood toast. There is fine richness and muscle to the broad-shouldered flavors that possess the usual volume and power of a fine Bâtard though not the same precision of the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, all wrapped in a lingering and mouth coating finish. Once again, this should be approachable, and enjoyable, young.” – Burghound, 90-93 pts.

Quintada-da-Boavista-Oratorio-2013

Quintada da Boavista, Oratorio, 2013

The 2013 Vinha do Oratório Vinhas Velhas (Quinta da Boavista) is a field blend from a single vineyard planted in 1930, aged for 18 months in new French oak (co-owner Tony Smith implied that will change—but at the moment, since this is their first harvest, new oak is all they have, he said). He added that this “contains some of the highest terraces in the Douro – some measuring over 8 meters tall.” It comes in at 13.5% alcohol. After acquiring this Quinta from Sogrape recently, Lima & Smith clearly intend to make a statement with the terroir. Crisp and fresh, this has big power and old-school mid-palate finesse. Laced with dark flavors, plums and blue fruit, this has fine grip on the finish, but it is just a bit too tight to approach now. It seems to have a bright future—almost as bright as the wine’s demeanor—but it is wholly unevolved. I’m leaning up for its potential, but it is all about the potential just now. This should hit the USA market around now, when this article appears, or not long after. There were a bit less than 1,000 bottles produced.

Quintada-da-Boavista-Ujo-2013

Quintada da Boavista, Ujo, 2013

The 2013 Vinha do Ujo Vinhas Velhas (Quinta da Boavista) is another of the winery’s field blends sourced from a 1930 vineyard. Aged for 16 months in new French oak, it comes in at just 13% alcohol. All field work is done by hand or horse or mule. The rustic terracing faces directly North. We estimate that the Ujo, which is Douro slang for an Eagle Owl, contains 25 or more native varieties of grapes." It is wonderful. It is hard not to take special notice here when this Ujo simply coats the palate. Intensely flavored (admittedly, a bit too much of that is from oak just now; it will hopefully show a lot better around 2021), it has the structure and class to remain serious. There isn’t a track record with this—it is newly acquired by the producer and this is their first harvest—so let’s be a bit conservative and see how it pulls itself together. Both single-vineyard wines have room to improve in the cellar. Assuming this pulls in a good chunk of the wood over the next five to seven years, it should meet my expectations. It will be pretty good even if it doesn’t wholly succeed in that regard. There were less than 1,000 bottles produced, which no doubt accounts for the price point to a considerable extent.

Sloan-Estate-Bordeaux-Blend-Asterisk-Napa-2010

Sloan Estate, Bordeaux Blend ''Asterisk'' (Napa), 2010

“Dark red cherry, plum, mocha, tobacco, licorice and spices flesh out in the 2010 Asterisk. Rich, round and creamy, the Asterisk shows plenty of Sloan Estate personality in a juicy, approachable style. The tannins could use another year or two to soften, but the wine’s balance is terrific. The blend is 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and drops of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.” (91 pts) -Vinous
