Joseph-Drouhin-Corton-2012

Joseph Drouhin, Corton , 2012

“Its colour is rather deep, its nose powerful and verging on candied fruit and spices when maturing. It has good structure in the mouth, without harshness. A good Corton must have “gras” (a velvety texture) to counterbalance tannin and acidity. On the palate, it recalls the candied fruit present in the nose. Very long and persistent, it ends on a very complex note."

Joseph-Drouhin-Corton-Bressandes-2012

Joseph Drouhin, Corton ''Bressandes'' , 2012

“Good structure when young, without any harshness. The nose is powerful, with aromas of candied fruit. As the wine ages, spice and musk are in evidence. A good Corton has a velvety texture (”gras") to counterbalance tannin and acidity. It is very persistent on the palate and ages well".

Joseph-Drouhin-Echezeaux-2013

Joseph Drouhin, Echezeaux , 2013

“Oak and menthol nuances serve as a backdrop to the gorgeously spicy aromas of black cherry, violet, plum, pomegranate liqueur and sandalwood scents. There is sensational density and power to the robust and overtly muscular big-bodied flavors that possess an abundance of mouth coating dry extract that also does a fine job of buffering the very firm tannic spine on the hugely long and explosive finish.”

Domaine-Jacques-Prieur-Echezeaux-2013

Domaine Jacques Prieur, Echezeaux, 2013

“Healthy, bright ruby-red. Aromas of black- and redcurrant and spices initially reminded me of Cabernet. Savory, juicy and refined, conveying terrific intensity to its flavors of dark cherry and fresh blood. Dense and fine-grained without any excess weight; primary but not a bit hard. This broad, utterly seamless wine shows excellent lift and definition and finishes with suave, fine-grained tannins and building length.” – Vinous (94 pts)

Joseph-Drouhin-Grands-Echezeaux-2012

Joseph Drouhin, Grands Echezeaux, 2012

“In its youth, the wine displays aromas of great finesse, reminiscent of cherry and dark chocolate or cocoa bean, which is a delicate and sought after characteristic of this wine. As the wine matures, these aromas evolve towards other refined nuances evoking undergrowth, truffle, fine leather and sometimes light notes of cigar or cedar wood. The result is of great elegance and breed. The tannins are refined and the silk and velvet of the body are a perfect match. Very long aftertaste in which some of the aromas previously encountered are again in evidence and create the most elegant sensation”.

Joseph-Drouhin-Griotte-Chambertin-2013

Joseph Drouhin, Griotte Chambertin, 2013

“The 2013 Griotte-Chambertin was cropped on October 8, partial whole-cluster with a 23-day maceration, and will spend slightly longer in oak. It was a small harvest of only three barrels (18 hectoliters per hectare). This sample had not been racked. It has an exuberant, almost Bonnes-Mares-like bouquet with small black cherries, blueberry, truffle and attractive chalky scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a very sensual entry, the oak a little conspicuous at the moment, but that will be subsumed with time. Plush and luxuriant, try to resist this for several years after bottling. This is “killer juice” (not a technical term) from Drouhin."

Domaine-Odoul-Coquard-Clos-de-Vougeot-2012

Domaine Odoul-Coquard, Clos de Vougeot, 2012

“Distinctive wine, fruity, powerful, with strong tannins and spicy notes. Better in five years, with great aging potential. A perfect match to spicy meals and ripened cheeses.”

Inniskillin-Riesling-Ice-Wine-2014

Inniskillin, Riesling Ice Wine (Canada) 375ml, 2017

“Fresh, this dessert white evokes floral, apricot, apple and waxy aromas and flavors. Elegant, bordering on racy despite the sweetness, ending with elderflower and lemon candy notes. Offers excellent length and a mouthwatering finish. Drink now through 2025. 1,400 cases made.” – Wine Spectator (93 points)

Quintada-da-Boavista-Oratorio-2013

Quintada da Boavista, Oratorio, 2013

“The 2013 Vinha do Oratório Vinhas Velhas (Quinta da Boavista) is a field blend from a single vineyard planted in 1930, aged for 18 months in new French oak (co-owner Tony Smith implied that will change—but at the moment, since this is their first harvest, new oak is all they have, he said). He added that this “contains some of the highest terraces in the Douro – some measuring over 8 meters tall.” It comes in at 13.5% alcohol. After acquiring this Quinta from Sogrape recently, Lima & Smith clearly intend to make a statement with the terroir. Crisp and fresh, this has big power and old-school mid-palate finesse. Laced with dark flavors, plums and blue fruit, this has fine grip on the finish, but it is just a bit too tight to approach now. It seems to have a bright future—almost as bright as the wine’s demeanor—but it is wholly unevolved. I’m leaning up for its potential, but it is all about the potential just now. This should hit the USA market around now, when this article appears, or not long after. There were a bit less than 1,000 bottles produced."

Quintada-da-Boavista-Ujo-2013

Quintada da Boavista, Ujo, 2013

“The 2013 Vinha do Ujo Vinhas Velhas (Quinta da Boavista) is another of the winery’s field blends sourced from a 1930 vineyard. Aged for 16 months in new French oak, it comes in at just 13% alcohol. All field work is done by hand or horse or mule. The rustic terracing faces directly North. We estimate that the Ujo, which is Douro slang for an Eagle Owl, contains 25 or more native varieties of grapes.” It is wonderful. It is hard not to take special notice here when this Ujo simply coats the palate. Intensely flavored (admittedly, a bit too much of that is from oak just now; it will hopefully show a lot better around 2021), it has the structure and class to remain serious. There isn’t a track record with this—it is newly acquired by the producer and this is their first harvest—so let’s be a bit conservative and see how it pulls itself together. Both single-vineyard wines have room to improve in the cellar. Assuming this pulls in a good chunk of the wood over the next five to seven years, it should meet my expectations. It will be pretty good even if it doesn’t wholly succeed in that regard. There were less than 1,000 bottles produced, which no doubt accounts for the price point to a considerable extent."
