Domaine Bouchard Pere et Fils, Volnay ''Caillerets Ancienne Cuvee Carnot'' 1er Cru Magnum, 2016

“Exquisite nose, with intense red fruits and wonderful clarity. The attack is lean and silky, intense and pure, and its fine acidity makes it seductive and moreish. Linear but complex, bright and very long. Drinking Window 2019 – 2038”
Decanter (95 points)

“A tightly wound style, featuring black cherry, blackberry, mineral and spice flavors fused to a solid spine of acidity and tannins. Dense and long, with vivid acidity focusing the lingering aftertaste. Best from 2023 through 2038. 150 cases imported.”

“More discreet wood more easily allows the overtly spicy aromas of poached plum, lavender and tea, The round yet reasonably well-detailed flavors possess a sophisticated mouth feel as well as fine mid-palate density, all wrapped in a youthfully austere, mineral-driven and very firm finish. Unlike the Grèves however, this excellent effort should be reasonably approachable after 5 to 7 years.”

“Good dark red. Alluring, mellow aromas and flavors of redcurrant, tobacco, spices and minerals, plus a suggestion of toffee. Round, silky and plush, offering mouthfilling voluptuousness without losing its shape. The compellingly round, sweet finish shows a fine dusting of tannins and superb length. Absolutely no sign of vine stress here!”

“The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot is lovely, wafting from the glass with a youthfully reserved bouquet of wild berries, forest floor, potpourri and a subtle framing of new cedar wood. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, broad and satiny, with beautifully powdery tannins cloaked in cool, succulent fruit, concluding with a long finish. Right now, this Caillerets is quite reserved, but its structural finesse and harmony are already impressive.”
