“The 2013 Vinha do Ujo Vinhas Velhas (Quinta da Boavista) is another of the winery’s field blends sourced from a 1930 vineyard. Aged for 16 months in new French oak, it comes in at just 13% alcohol. All field work is done by hand or horse or mule. The rustic terracing faces directly North. We estimate that the Ujo, which is Douro slang for an Eagle Owl, contains 25 or more native varieties of grapes.” It is wonderful. It is hard not to take special notice here when this Ujo simply coats the palate. Intensely flavored (admittedly, a bit too much of that is from oak just now; it will hopefully show a lot better around 2021), it has the structure and class to remain serious. There isn’t a track record with this—it is newly acquired by the producer and this is their first harvest—so let’s be a bit conservative and see how it pulls itself together. Both single-vineyard wines have room to improve in the cellar. Assuming this pulls in a good chunk of the wood over the next five to seven years, it should meet my expectations. It will be pretty good even if it doesn’t wholly succeed in that regard. There were less than 1,000 bottles produced, which no doubt accounts for the price point to a considerable extent."
