Galardi-Terra-di-Lavoro-IGP-2012

Galardi, Terra di Lavoro IGP, 2012

The winery and surrounding hillside vineyards are located at approximately 1300 feet above sea level and benefit from ideal growing conditions, including climate and exposure. The name of their praised icon wine, Terra di Lavoro, which translates to Land of Work, reflects the challenge of cultivating the area’s extremely rocky soil. Yields and overall volume are very low, only a few thousand bottles are produced each year. By focusing on the native varietals Aglianico and Piedirosso, the owners and oenologist Riccardo Cotarella are able to take advantage of the low yields, which enhance the flavor profile and structure of their wines.

“From a ten hectare vineyard, the 2012 Roccamonfina Terra di Lavoro touches on many of the glory points that made this such an important cult wine for Campania. Although 2012 was a hot vintage, this wine shows an impressive sense of balance and elegance. This is especially apparent on the nose where it delivers blasts of dark fruit, balsam herb, tar, licorice and volcanic ash with meticulous precision. The fruit is layered, soft and ripe. In fact, the mouthfeel is the wine’s best asset. Its fine tannins offer enormous structure, but they are soft and yielding at the same time. This is an open and honest expression of Aglianico (80%) and Piedirosso that has only just begun its long evolution.”

Zenato-Amarone-Classico-2013

Zenato, Amarone Classico, 2015

“While this is heady and spicy, it’s also quite reserved for this producer, framing glazed cherries and dried meat against a backdrop of citrus and roasted herbs. The ornately woven texture and generous fruit work very well with the linear acidity and firm-tannin bite. Really excellent. Drink in 2021.”

Pico-Maccario-Barbera-dAsti-Rosato-Lavignone-2018

Pico Maccario, Rosato Lavignone, 2018

Pale salmon in appearance, Lavignone Rosato is beautiful to look at. It is even better to drink, however, as the nose and palate are met by playful aromas of wild strawberry, watermelon, cranberry, fresh-cut grass, and river stone. A refreshing, but modest, backbone of acidity supports a round mouth-feel and velvety texture. The dry and balanced finish leaves the palate feeling clean and refreshed.

A good rosé is not just pleasurable, it is versatile too. Lavignone Rosato’s bright aromatics and dry finish make it ideally suited to a wide range of dishes that incorporate fresh, in-season ingredients— particularly fresh vegetables and tomatoes. From a cool salad of farfalle pasta, fava beans, cherry tomatoes and spring onion to salt-baked red snapper with coconut rice to an evening on the back patio, Lavignone Rosato is right at home.

Damilano-Barolo-Lecinquevigne-2014

Damilano, Barolo Lecinquevigne, 2014

“Very pretty 2014 with orange-peel, leather, spice and plum character. Medium body, firm tannins and a juicy finish. Drink or hold.”
James Suckling (91 points)

“The 2014 Barolo Lecinquevigne is a nice, accessible wine for Barolo newbies. It has a lean appearance with flashes of black licorice and scorched earth, along with some interesting tar or asphalt notes. Some 60,000 bottles were released.”
Wine Advocate (90 points)

“Walks the line between dusty cherry fruit and leather and tobacco flavors, buoyed by vibrant acidity and light tannins that leave a dusting of cocoa and spice on the finish. Elegant, yet intense. "

Grattamacco, Bolgheri Rosso, 2017

“A fresh and clean wine with currants and cherries and a sliced-lemon undertone. Medium body. Fine finish. Drink or hold.”
James Suckling (92 points)

“Bright, laced with plum, black currant, black cherry and leather notes, this is balanced and juicy. Just as this seems soft and ready, the civilized tannins emerge. Finishes long, with a chalky feel.”

Altesino-Brunello-di-Montalcino-2014

Altesino, Brunello di Montalcino , 2014

“This wine opens to a thin and streamlined appearance. The 2014 Brunello di Montalcino mirrors the main characteristics of the vintage with a clean mouthfeel and bright berry aromas. The Brunellos from 2014 are better suited to near or medium-term drinking and that’s definitely the case with this wine. I’d suggest a pairing with your favorite pasta dish topped with creamy cheese sauce. Sangiovese has the natural acidity to cut through any fatty foods. This expression from Altesino achieves more fruit ripeness in 2014 with aromas of plum, dark cherry and dried cassis. Some 110,000 bottles were produced.”

Altesino-Brunello-di-Montalcino-Montosoli-2014

Altesino, Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli, 2014

“Montosoli is perhaps the most celebrated single vineyard site in Montalcino. Because it is farmed by multiple producers, we get a chance to taste many interesting and divergent expressions of Montosoli Sangiovese. Altesino’s 2014 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli (with 10,000 bottles made) is one of the most consistent year in and year out. The wine boats a beautifully refined and complex bouquet with an embroidery of wild berry notes that segue to spice, tar and grilled herb. I love the wine’s intensity. I can’t believe it was easy to achieve without significant sacrifices in the vineyard (including rigorous green harvesting). The mouthfeel is smooth, silky and long. This is one of the best Brunellos made in the difficult 2014 growing season. Hands down.”

Cantele-Chardonnay-Teresa-Manara-2017

Cantele, Chardonnay Teresa Manara , 2017

The Cantele estate is a third-generation family-owned and run winery founded by the current generation’s grandparents, immigrants from the north who settled in Puglia after WWII.

Cantele is known for its pioneering work with Chardonnay and its passion for native grapes. Cantele set the standard for Italian Chardonnay when founding winemaker Augusto Cantele began experimenting with picking times and temperature-controlled fermentation in the 90s.

Puglia’s limestone soils are ideal for producing fresh, balanced, and richly flavored Chardonnay with mineral backbone.

Castelluccio-Sangiovese-Ronco-dei-Ciliegi-2011

Castelluccio, Sangiovese Ronco dei Ciliegi , 2011

Owned by the renowned oenologist Vittorio Fiore, Castelluccio was originally founded in the 1970s. In the 1980s Vittorio Fiore became the consulting winemaker and in 1999 he purchased the majority of shares in the property.

Castelluccio is nestled in the Modigliana Hills, between the two towns of Faenza and Forlì, at an altitude range of 750 – 1500 feet above sea level. The territory is known as Emilia Romagna and was part of Tuscany until the 1930s. Castelluccio extends approximately 150 acres, with 36 acres of vineyards and 6 acres with olive trees. The soil is compact layered marl and limestone, the location is composed of micro-areas called “ronchi”, referring to the rock formations that protrude from the mountain side, and render a very high quality of grapes. Sangiovese di Romagna, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc are the main grape varieties grown at Castelluccio. Sangiovese di Romagna is indigenous and expresses perfectly the character of the terroir and is a central grape to some of the world’s greatest wines.

The name “Ronco dei Ciliegi” means “Vineyard of the Cherry Trees” – a nod to the two large, old cherry trees found by the vineyard. The Sangiovese grapes for this wine are planted on south-eastern facing slopes for maximum sun exposure and are harvested during the first week of October. The wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks and then aged in French oak for 12 months.

Colle-Massari-Rosso-Riserva-Montecucco-2014

Colle Massari, Rosso Riserva Montecucco , 2014

ColleMassari is the most important and largest estate of the Montecucco appellation. The vineyards are located on the Montecucco hill that gives name to the appellation. The vines on the Montecucco hill are the oldest Sangiovese vines of the DOCG (more than 60 years old).

Although it is a “new” DOCG, wine has been made in Montecucco since the time of the Etruscans in the 8th century. The wine making tradition is now continued by Maria Iris Bertarelli and Claudio Tipa, who purchased the vineyard in 1998 to be the heart of the Montecucco DOC that it was their vision to create. Montecucco is located between Montalcino, and Scansano, and benefits from microclimates similar to both of those regions.

“Shows energy and focus with black cherry and berry character and hints of dark tea. Medium body, integrated fruit and fine tannins. A beauty. Drink now. Made from organic grapes.”
