Clos De La Chapelle

Domaine Clos de la Chapelle is a new name of a very old Domaine. Originally founded by Victor Boillot in 1865 with his purchase of Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Chapelle (a monopole), the domaine added Volnay 1er Cru En Carelle and Pommard 1er Cru Les Chanlins over the course of the next half century. The reputation of the Clos de la Chapelle monopole vineyard dates back to the 19th century, with Louis Pasteur himself writing regularly to Victor Boillot requesting bottles of this exceptional wine. After nearly 150 years in the Boillot family, the domaine was purchased by Mark M. O’Connell, a life-long Burgundy lover. With recent purchases in the Côte de Beaune, the Domaine now farms nearly 4 hectares, all grand cru and premier cru and is certified organic. The goal of the domaine is to make the best possible expression of terroir for each of the wines under its stewardship.

“The wine is dynamite, soaring from the glass in a blaze of red and black cherries, red currants, a touch of venison, coriander seed, a bit of bonfire, raw cocoa, stony soil tones and cedary wood. On the palate the wine is deep, fullbodied and nascently complex, with a very sappy core of fruit, lovely transparency, finegrained tannins and a very long, tangy and promising finish. Great juice in the making. 2025-2075.”
- John Gilman (95 points)

“Generous wood and menthol again suffuses the ripe and fresh nose that consists of dark cherry, earth, forest floor and soft sauvage nuances. There is really lovely delineation to the big-bodied and also overtly powerful flavors that possess a bit more refinement before concluding in a tautly muscular, focused and attractively textured finish that is serious but not really austere. This is even more structured than the Rognet and indisputably going to require an extended stay in a cool cellar. Patience!”

“An opulent texture sets the stage for black cherry, blackberry, licorice and tobacco flavors. The structure is well-integrated, the finish long and spicy. Very classy. Best from 2018 through 2030. 95 cases made.”

Clos-de-la-Chapelle-Corton-Rognets-Grand-Cru-2013

Clos de la Chapelle, Corton ''Rognets'' Grand Cru, 2013

“The excellent and quite red fruity bouquet delivers a mélange of cherries, strawberries, a touch of blood orange, woodsmoke, stony minerality, mustard seed and a stylish framing of cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and impressively pure on the attack, with a very good core, ripe tannins, tangy acids and a long, properly youthful and chewy finish. A lovely bottle of young Corton, but give it a good decade in the cellar to blossom. 2025-2075.”
- John Gilman (94 points)

“There is a lovely sense of energy to the powerful and concentrated broad-shouldered flavors that also possess a velvety mouth feel, all wrapped in a mildly rustic and dusty finish.”

Clos-de-la-Chapelle-Corton-Rognets-2014

Clos de la Chapelle, Corton Rognets, 2014

“Perfumed with sweet smoke, spice and macerated cherry aromas that lead to a core of cherry fruit, this red is supple and enticing. At a youthful stage, but shows fine harmony nonetheless, with a long aftertaste of ripe fruit, oak spice and graphite. Best from 2020 through 2035. 145 cases made.”
- Wine Spectator (95 points)

“A touch of oak sets off the mildly reduced nose though a note of menthol is evident in the background. There is excellent volume and concentration to the broad-shouldered and muscular flavors that brim with mouth coating dry extract before concluding in an overtly robust and slightly austere finish of outstanding depth and length. This is a classic Rognet that is presently quite compact and it is immediately evident that this is going to need every bit of a decade to unwind the firm tannic spine and 15 years would not surprise me. In a word, impressive.”

Clos de la Chapelle, Pommard ''Les Chanlins'' 1er Cru, 2013

“I love the domaine’s old vine bottling of Chanlins, which hails from eighty year-old vines, and the 2013 has turned out very well indeed. The lovely nose wafts from the glass in a youthful blend of red plums, cherries, cocoa, a bit of pigeon, a superb base of soil, fresh herb tones and cedar. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and very, very elegant on the attack, with excellent mid-palate depth, ripe tannins, a fine sense of sappiness and a very long, transparent finish. Fine juice in the making. 2021-2060.”

Clos-de-la-Chapelle-Pommard-Chanlins-2014

Clos de la Chapelle, Pommard ''Chanlins'', 2014

“The eighty-five year-old vines here have produced a very pretty and red fruity example of the vintage in 2014. The bouquet jumps from the glass in a classy blend of cherries, quince, a touch of blood orange, pigeon, woodsmoke and a gentle framing of cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and really very suave on the attack (particularly for a young Pommard!), with a fine core of fruit, fine grained tannins and a long, focused and tangy finish. This will be outstanding in the fullness of time! (Drink between 2022-2060).”
John Gilman (94 points)

“A lean, sinewy style, evoking a base of minerality and spicy oak to elevate the berry and currant fruit. Tense and peppery, this finds equilibrium on the long finish. Best from 2020 through 2035. 72 cases made.”
Wine Spectator (90 points)

“A much more deeply pitched nose is comprised by notes of violet, plum, black cherry and discreet floral hints. There is excellent volume to the suave and very rounded medium weight flavors that also exude a fine bead of minerality onto the dusty, persistent and mildly austere finish. This velvety effort should drink reasonably well after only 5 years and reward up to a decade of cellar time.”

Clos de la Chapelle, Pommard ''Epenots'' 1er Cru, 2013

“A deft touch of wood sets off a very firmly reduced nose so be sure to decant this if you’re going to try a bottle in its youth. By contrast there is both fine volume and richness to the delicious, round and velvet-textured medium weight flavors that possess solid mid-palate density though there is a touch of dryness to the dusty and mildly tangy finale. It’s possible that this may round out but I would be inclined to drink on the younger side for its fruit.”

Clos de la Chapelle, Volnay ''Clos de la Chapelle'' 1er Cru, 2011

“This is also attractively airy, elegant and ultra-pure with its extract of red pinot fruit, intense dried floral aromas that are laced with anise hints. There is really lovely detail and vibrancy to the equally refined medium-bodied flavors that possess a supple mouth feel before culminating in a silky finish that is a bit more persistent if not quite as complex, at least not yet. A qualitative choice.”
- Burghound (91 points)

“A smooth, cherry- and spice-flavored red, with vibrant acidity and light tannins imparting focus. This lingers pleasantly, picking up a mineral element on the finish.”

Clos de la Chapelle, Volnay ''Clos de la Chapelle'' 1er Cru, 2012

“An ultra-pure nose of kirsch, cherry, spice and a whiff of toast introduce beautifully detailed and mineral-driven middle weight flavors that also possess a silky mouth feel. There is better phenolic maturity to the supporting tannins and overall this is a classic Chapelle of lace and delicacy. While this could also be enjoyed young I would be inclined to give it at least a few years of cellar time as the wood has not yet fully integrated at this early juncture.”

Clos-de-la-Chapelle-Volnay-En-Carelle-1er-Cru-2014

Clos de la Chapelle, Volnay En Carelle 1er Cru, 2014

“Stylish oak lends a spicy, resinous cast to the cherry and currant notes, while the firm structure imparts support and texture. Shows tension and harmony. Should come together nicely in two to three years. Best from 2020 through 2032. 122 cases made.”
- Wine Spectator (92 points)

“A pretty and distinctly restrained nose features primarily notes of various red berries that are laced with whispers of spice, earth and floral nuances. There is a subtle trace of minerality present on the detailed and almost delicate middle weight flavors that terminate in a dusty and mildly austere finish that exhibits just a trace of edginess. Even though the balance is not ideal I like the obvious Volnay character.”
