Pale gold in color, the Silex Blanc is an elegant embodiment of Sauvignon Blanc, and characteristic of the Sancerre region, with a nose of little white flowers. In the mouth it is silky, round, and delicate, with a pleasing richness and complexity on the back palate. It has a good balance between alcohol and acidity levels in the mouth, marked with mellow notes of wood (acacia, well-ripened exotic fruits, with minerals in the background). Balance and refinement are the underpinnings of the Cuvée Silex.

Located in the heart of the Sancerre region, Domaine Delaporte is a family business that has been passed from father to son since the 17th century. Hailing from the beautiful village of Chavignol, which is renowned for the goat cheese Crottin de Chavignol, the Domaine has been under the guidance of Matthieu Delaporte, since 2010. Of the many soil types that run through the Loire Valley, among the most prized are vineyards that sit atop the flinty Silex soils of Sancerre. Some of Sancerre’s leading Domaines have vineyards with Silex soils, so coveted because they impart the smoky minerality that makes Sancerre so distinctive.  Plus, added bonus, they capture and retain heat allowing grapes to ripen to their fullest potential. Delaporte’s soil-specific cuvee, “Silex” comes from vines that are at a minimum 50 years old. The result is an elegant embodiment of Sancerre, full of nuanced aromatics like white flowers, Meyer lemon, and crushed rocks. On the palate, it is mouthcoating and rich, with ripe pineapple, passion fruit, lemon and smoky minerality that seems to echo the soil. This is a full-bodied, textural style of Sancerre, with excellent balance, worthy of refined dishes featuring scallops, lobster and sauce-based classics like veal scaloppini or halibut in beurre blanc sauce. This cuvée is delicious now, but collectors will be rewarded by setting enough aside to watch it develop over time.
