Rare Millésime 1999 reveals an eccentricity, a result of extreme weather conditions. On the palate, its extraverted qualities go hand in hand with a caressing distinction and audacious freshness.

Tasting Note: Deep-yellow, energetic bubbles dance in an extroverted effervescence. Incredible scents of tuberose, iris and narcissus lead to notes of mountain hay, soft fruits and accents of black truffle and vanilla. A caressing opulence unveils fleshy notes of herbal tea, mirabelle plum, bergamot and spices (cinnamon, curcuma, clove) with a lingering aftertaste of candied fruits.

A nicely toasty Champagne, with lots of smoke, brioche, lemon peel, honey, dried apricot and roasted nut flavors. Firm acidity provides a lovely freshness and framework, and it's seamlessly integrated with the flavors and refined texture. Features more nut and smoke notes on the long, lingering finish. Drink now through 2024. 150 cases imported.

The 1999 Rare is a medium-bodied, focused offering redolent of flowers, pears and green apples. Here, too, the wine is well- made and offers good definition but not the detail or complexity of its peers at this price point. Piper-Heidsieck’s Rare is Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. This bottle was disgorged in December, 2007. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2012. Piper-Heidsieck is another of Champagne’s best-known brands. The house traces its history back to the original Heidsieck and Co., which was founded in 1785.
