Affectionately known by our customers as the Bordeaux with the heart on the label, this wine hails from the Médoc’s most northerly classed growth in the appellation of St. Estèphe. Categorized as a “second wine,” it is a great introduction to the accolade-collecting Grand Vin, Château Calon Ségur. It’s important to remember that second wines don’t mean second rate! The biggest draw is the style and accessibility they present to the savvy consumer. Often checking in at a much lower price point than the Grand Vin, these wines are less tannic, see less time in oak and are more approachable in their youth. This bottling displays great depth of inky color and is heady with sweet blackberry jam wafting from the glass followed by a core of cassis and notes of graphite and sun-tanned leather. Rich and beautifully proportioned, the palate offers layer upon layer of black cherry, plum, truffle and cigar box. It is tightly knit and elegant with dusty tannins providing structure. It’s not often we see a wine of this quality under $40 – with its signature heart featured prominently on the label, you can buy some for yourself and some to share the love.
The origin of the heart on the label comes from Nicolas-Alexandre, Marquis de Segur, owner of Château Calon-Ségur who at the time also owned Château Latour and Château Lafite. Despite these First Growth jewels, he famously said, “I make wine at Lafite and Latour but my heart is at Calon-Ségur.” The label depicts a heart around the Château’s name for this reason.
