"An excellent effort, the 2011 Gloria continues the success this well-known property has enjoyed over the last several decades. A delicious concoction of red and black fruits, spice box, and earth as well as a silky textured, medium-bodied style emerge from this is an undeniable sleeper of the vintage. The round tannins, delicious fruit and forward character suggest it should be enjoyed over the next 7-8 years." - Robert Parker

The Sleeping Beauty of 2011

Most Bordeaux lovers are familiar with Chateau Gloria and have probably enjoyed a glass or two at some point, and may even have bottles quietly slumbering in their cellars. It certainly gives the impression of a long and storied history and inclusion in Bordeaux’s historic 1855 Classified Growths. But the fact is, Chateau Gloria is a relatively young estate who’s history dates back only to 1942. Created by Henri Martin, the estate was built up row by row and parcel by parcel over several years of systematic negotiations with neighbors in the commune of St. Julien to buy surrounding “cru classé” parcels. Even though Chateau Gloria is not itself a classified growth, the vineyards that comprise its holdings are, having once belonged to Chateau Beychevelle, Chateau Léoville-Poyferré, Chateau Gruaud-Larose, Chateau Léoville-Barton, Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou and Chateau Lagrange. You can think of it as an assortment of some of St. Julien’s best terroirs. The wines of St. Julien are for the connoisseur who seeks refinement, tradition and balance in their reds. They don’t have the wallop of power like Pauillac or the perfumed charm of Margaux but what they do offer is plenty of persistent, intriguing and rewarding character to enjoy. Robert Parker said of it, “An excellent effort, the 2011 Gloria continues the success this well-known property has enjoyed over the last several decades. A delicious concoction of red and black fruits, spice box, and earth as well as a silky textured, medium-bodied style emerge from this is an undeniable sleeper of the vintage.” Perfectly stored, ready to drink now and at a great price – who can argue with that?
