Discreet wood sets off a slightly riper but otherwise similar nose to the "straight" Chevalier, which leads to bigger, richer and fuller well-muscled and impressively scaled flavors that culminate in a powerful and beautifully textured finish of simply stunning length. Despite the weight and obvious heft, there is absolutely no sense of heaviness as the underlying minerality imparts a real sense of lift. In a word, terrific.

Drinking at its Peak!

For many wine lovers the concept of buying wines to age for 10, 15 or 20 years is simply unthinkable. After all, it must be properly cellared and you must track its development year after year to enjoy it before its decline. But the team at Château Simard has taken the guesswork out of when to drink their wines. They hold them at the Château in St. Émilion until the optimal drinking window. That’s when the wine comes together in a harmonious balance between the fruit, acidity and tannins. It is an exhilarating experience to find a mellow and soft texture, with all those tertiary aromas of tobacco, forest floor, truffle, earth and cedar. In addition to a perfectly aged wine, you also get the expertise of a quintessential St. Émilion producer, Alain Vauthier, who also heads the famous Château Ausone. He inherited the estate in 2008 and decided then to open the Château’s important collection of past vintages to the market. Lucky for us, it's on sale!
