The Everyday Mouton!

Croix Mouton was formerly known as Château Mouton throughout its long history in the Bordeaux Supérieur appellation. In 1997, Jean-Philippe Janoueix purchased the estate and after a lawsuit was filed by famous First Growth, Château Mouton, officially changed its name to Croix Mouton. Having found the estate and vineyards abandoned and in disrepair, in 1998 extensive renovations took place. Located on the edge of Fronsac, this is home to high-quality Merlot. For the everyday, value-driven Bordeaux it’s important to understand the distinction of Bordeaux Supérieur, so here’s a quick brush-up: There is the entry-level Bordeaux AOC which produces light and fruity wines that are easy to drink. One step up on the quality scale is the Bordeaux Supérieur AOC, which covers the same geographic area as the Bordeaux AOC, but is often produced by single parcels of older vines (Croix Mouton’s vines average at 43 years of age!). Bordeaux Supérieur wines must be aged longer and come from vines planted more densely and with lower yields. As the name implies, the result is a superior wine that is richer and more complex.  And the proof is in the bottle! After Croix Mouton’s first vintage, critics took note of the excellent value for the price. With a fresh and complex character, this bottling is full of red fruit flavors and plush texture. It is full-boded, elegant and easy to drink. Easy on the wallet, too! Basically, everything we want from an everyday Bordeaux!
