The Queen of Beaujolais

Hailing from the village of Brouilly in the southern reaches of Beaujolais lies Chateau de la Chaize, one of the most historic and exceptional wine estates in France. In terms of vineyard quality and sheer size the vineyard holdings are massive, covering a total of 790 acres, most of which are contiguous. Founded in 1676 by Jean-Francois de la Chaize d’Aix, it has been passed down in the same family for three centuries until 2017 when it passed to the hands of enterprising French businessman, Christophe Gruy. Looking to breath new life into the glorious estate with an eye towards sustainability, all vineyards are now transitioning to organic farming. Beaujolais is one of the hottest categories for light reds and while the village level offerings are delightful in their own right, the Crus are where Beaujolais really gets interesting. With its evocative name and floral characteristics, Fleurie is often referred to as the “Queen of Beaujolais.” The vines here are almost all planted on pink granite, which gives Fleurie its light, silky and supple body. It is a charming wine with a deep scarlet color and plenty of violet and rose aromas that are accented by bright notes of blueberry and red fruit. Truly a great red for summer, we suggest a slight chill to showcase the lively fruit and silky body. With new ownership and innovations in the cellar – this is an estate to watch!
