DAngerville-Volnay-Clos-des-Ducs-2013

D'Angerville, Volnay ''Clos des Ducs'' , 2013

“The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs has that citrus-like freshness; that Seville orange marmalade trait that was tangible in a range of mature Clos des Ducs tasted the previous week. There are touches of violet that emerge with continued aeration. The palate is very feminine and refined, laid back almost, but that distracts from the structure underneath and the persistence and minerality on the finish. This is a regal, perhaps one should say, “ducal,” Clos des Ducs that should drink beautifully over the next 25-30 years."

Veuve-Clicquot-Cave-Privee-Brut-Magnum-1982

Veuve Clicquot, ''Cave Privee'' Brut Magnum, 1982

“Bright, sleek and elegant, with mouthwatering acidity, this is soft and creamy in texture, offering hints of smoked almond and whole-grain toast, accented by dried apple, crème brûlée and dried herb notes. Rich details of grilled nut and oyster shell linger on the persistent finish. Drink now through 2024.”

Domaine-Comte-Georges-de-Vogue-Bonnes-Mares-Grand-Cru-Magnum-2014

Domaine Comte Georges de Vogue, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru Magnum, 2014

“The 2015 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru is really blossoming now that the wine is safely in bottle. It has a gorgeous, floral bouquet with scents of blueberry, blackberry and briary, wonderful mineral expression here with a palpable sense of energy and precision. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin, what you might call a “cool” Bonnes Mares, sleek and sensual with very fine tension towards the red cherry and kirsch tinged finish. What a gorgeous Bonnes-Mares, though I would be inclined to afford it several years in bottle. Tasted November 2016."

Mommessin-Clos-de-Tart-Magnum-2011

Mommessin, Clos de Tart Magnum, 2011

“Bright ruby-red. Aromas of briary black raspberry, wild herbs, licorice, violet, rose and pepper. Smooth, dense and suave; shows a fine-grained texture but seemed to shut down in the glass. Finishes with good medicinal reserve and rather substantial, slightly dusty tannins that coat the front teeth. About half of the lots were vinified with whole clusters.”

Domaine-Comte-Georges-de-Vogue-Musigny-Vieilles-Vignes-Magnum-2014

Domaine Comte Georges de Vogue, Musigny Vieilles Vignes Magnum, 2014

“The 2014 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru has a very intense, cold stone and blackberry scented bouquet, moving towards subtle marine like aromas (oyster shells, Crustacea) with time. There is just wonderful precision here. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip in the mouth, firm backbone, a slightly more masculine Musigny with just a hint of savoriness towards the long finish. This is showing great personality even at this early juncture, although of course, it will not even consider reaching its drinking plateau without 8-10 years in bottle. I suspect this Musigny will only gradually open. Tasted November 2016.”
- Robert Parker (96 points)

“Bright, dark red. Knockout nose offers most of the Musigny food groups: raspberry, cherry, earth, wild herbs, flowers and minerals, plus a leathery nuance. Pungent and extremely intense but utterly weightless owing to its near-perfect balance of sweetness and juiciness. Best today on the explosive, building back end, which offers a powerfully chewy, sappy impression but no rough edges. Winemaker François Millet suggests waiting at least 10 to 15 years.”
Vinous (95+ points)

“While highly complex this is cool to the point of only grudgingly revealing a strikingly layered combination of violets, rose petals, sandalwood, anise, clove, plum and dark currant scents. This is a big and overtly muscular wine with broad-shouldered and admirably concentrated flavors yet for all of the impressive size, weight and volume, the massively long finish is serene, even Zen-like. 2014 is a relatively seductive and forward vintage for this storied wine, and I appreciate that calling a wine “forward” when it will likely need 20 years to fully mature is a relative concept!"

Quintarelli-Alzero-Double-Magnum-2007

Quintarelli, Alzero Double Magnum, 2007

“A blend of 40% Cabernet Franc, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot, the 2007 Alzero is an Amarone-inspired red blend. The two Cabernet varieties undergo a three-month appassimento process and the Merlot is added at the last minute before bottling. This last grape adds a very evident layer of cherry sweetness and softness that goes a long way in defining this wine. Alzero has been in production since 1983 and no vintage has ever been skipped. This is a dark and brooding expression with a playful mix of sweet fruit intensity and dark tannic background shading.”

Eisele-Vineyard-Cabernet-Sauvignon-Double-Magnum-2014

Eisele Vineyard, Cabernet Sauvignon Double Magnum, 2014

“Intensely scented dried flowers on the nose in the rose to lilac spectrum. Raspberry and blackberry undertones. Rose perfumes. It’s full-bodied, yet everything’s in finesse. Superfine tannins coat your palate and give you incredible length, and it all last for minutes on the palate. Great resonance. Not the power of 2013 but intellect and persistence prevails here. A joy to taste now, but this will improve for decades ahead.”

Joseph-Drouhin-Beaune-Clos-des-Mouches-Rouge-45L-1976

Joseph Drouhin, Beaune ''Clos des Mouches'' Rouge 4.5L, 1976

“Unusually fresh and relatively bright aromas in the context of where the vast majority of ‘76s are today, even from larger format bottles, with spicy red and black fruit, sous-bois and earth hints that introduce rich, delicious and still vibrant medium full flavors underpinned by firm but integrated tannins on the long if ever-so-slightly drying finish. This is highly complex and drinking perfectly now and though it will hold for another 50 years in this format, I can’t see any further improvement. A first rate example of the vintage.”

Vega-Sicilia-Unico-Artist-Label-Double-Magnum-2007

Vega Sicilia, Unico Artist Label Double Magnum, 2007

“2007 was a cold vintage in Ribera and it produced lighter, fresher wines (perhaps not as problematic as 2008, but there was also frost in 2007). The wine might be a tad lighter than other vintages, but it’s more structured than 2008; it combines elegance and power, is nicely balanced and should be able to develop in bottle for many years”
- Wine Advocate (95 points)

“This harmonious red is balanced and deep, offering ripe plum and currant flavors, with black pepper, tobacco, licorice and mineral accents. Delivers plenty of structure, with well-integrated tannins and lively acidity. The wine remains graceful through the long, spicy finish. Drink now through 2027."
Wine Spectator (94 points)

“Vivid ruby-red. Spice- and mineral-accented redcurrant, cherry, cured tobacco and candied rose on the highly perfumed nose. A juicy, sharply focused midweight offering lively red fruit and floral pastille flavors and earthy suggestions of chewing tobacco and succulent herbs. In a graceful, energetic style (due to the cool vintage, no doubt), with strong finishing cut, resonating floral character and velvety tannins coming in late to add shape and grip. A successful wine for the vintage, no question.”

Palmer-18-Liter-Margaux-Melchoir-1998

Palmer, (Margaux) 18-Liter (Melchoir), 1998

“Very deep garnet colour. Smokey / spicy aromas with some sweaty saddles, cloves and white pepper complimenting the core of warm cassis. The medium+ bodied wine is quite muscular with concentrated, somewhat masculine / savoury fruit juxtaposed by the elegance of structure. Medium to firm very fine tannins and medium+ acidity. Long finish.”

Domaine-Bouchard-Pere-et-Fils-Le-Montrachet-2015

Domaine Bouchard Pere et Fils, Le Montrachet, 2015

“There is a hint of exoticism to the citrus, pear and white peach suffused nose that is presently trimmed in a noticeable, if very slight, touch of sulfur. The rich and extremely concentrated big-bodied flavors possess an impressive amount of dry extract as well as excellent length. Not surprisingly this is definitely going to need time as it’s on the monolithic side today and there isn’t quite the same sense of energy compared to the La Cabotte. Those items duly noted, my rating offers the benefit of the doubt that this will harmonize in time because at the time of my tasting it had been in bottle for barely 45 days.”

Domaine-Comtes-Georges-de-Vogue-Musigny-2013

Domaine Comte Georges de Vogue, Musigny, 2013

“Very dark bright red. Great purity and lift to the aromas of black cherry, violet, graphite, bitter chocolate and minerals. Showing less obvious density today than the Bonnes-Mares but this is extremely tight and unevolved, with its saline crushed stone and mineral elements currently dominating its underlying fruit. The yield was just 20 hectoliters per hectare, due in large part to millerandage, but this extremely imploded Musigny is showing little of the early sweetness one might expect from tiny berries. Finishes with outstanding flavor authority, length and grip. This wine should go on for decades.”
Vinous (96+ points)

“This is also quite aromatically restrained with its cool, airy and extraordinarily complex nose that features notes of red raspberry, black cherry, violet, rose petal, Asian-style spices, in particular cinnamon and anise plus a hint of orange pekoe tea. There is superb concentration to the intensely stony and well-delineated broad-shouldered flavors that also brim with palate soaking dry extract that helps to buffer that imposingly powerful, tautly muscular and massively long finish. This is breathtaking in just how much power and intensity it packs yet there isn’t a hair out of place. In a word, ‘wow’!”
- Burghound (96 points)

“Served blind, the 2013 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru from Comte de Vogüé wore its pedigree on its sleeve, opening in the glass with a superb bouquet of wild strawberries, rose, cherry, blood orange and plum—much like it did in barrel. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and layered, with succulent acids, a deep mid-palate and a sapid, mineral-laden finish. Pure and transparent, this is a beautifully elegant Musigny that should be comparatively approachable in another 5 or 6 years.”

Bellevue-Mondotte-St-Emilion-2008

Bellevue-Mondotte, (St. Emilion), 2008

“An extraordinary effort in this vintage, this 2008 was made from lower yields than the 2010 (the 2008’s equaled 20 hectoliters per hectare) and is a blend of 90% Merlot and equal parts Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon that came in at 14% natural alcohol. Michel Rolland has been the consultant for all the Perse estates since their acquisition, and the 2008’s fruit was harvested very late, October 20. The result is a backward, dense purple-colored wine revealing a crushed rock-like liqueur along with highly extracted, massive flavors of black currants, sweet cherries, licorice and toast. This full-bodied effort requires 5-6 years of bottle age and should last for 25-30 years.”

Pierre-Damoy-Chambertin-Clos-de-Beze-2014

Pierre Damoy, Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru, 2014

“Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, Damoy’s 2014 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru was one of the highlights of the entire tasting. It has a showstopper of a nose with brilliantly defined black plum, cranberry, wild strawberry, sous bois and minerals. You just have to stop and admire the clarity of the aromatics here. The palate is extremely well balanced with a fine bead of acidity interwoven through the black cherry, cranberry and raspberry fruit. There is the structure and masculinity of a Clos de Bèze, and yet it is certainly not unapproachable at this premature stage. Fabulous. You can feel the mouth still tingling long after the wine has departed. Quite brilliant. Tasted September 2017.”
