The Penfolds Estate has made this out-of-this-world cab since the 1990 vintage. It has now taken its place as one of the best. Anywhere. Always deep and rich—one might say like Napa—but so much more.

Penfold’s Grange (shiraz) is surely one of the world’s greatest red wines. The “707” is their best cabernet. Some say that it’s right up their with the First Growth Bordeaux.

Spain has taken to cabernet and produces some of the best in all of Europe (Bordeaux included!) The Torres estate stands near if not at the pinacle of Spanish winemaking. This is a pretty hefty cab but still not overwhelming as some from—ahem—Napa. Plenty of red and dark fruits like cassis. The finish goes on and on.

There are dozens and dozens of Aussie cab/shiraz blends out there. Penfolds was at the birth of the movement and still has, year after year, one of the very best.

Guigal is world famous for his red wines from the Rhone Valley in France, and his 2009 Cote-du-Rhone which is a blend of red grapes is an extraordinary value that offers great fruit flavors with complexity of spice, earth, and a beautiful smokiness with a smooth finish.

“(Roughly half Syrah and half Grenache, with a touch of Mourvedre): Vivid ruby. Complex aromas of red and dark berries, Indian spices and violet, with slow-building smokiness. Taut and focused on the palate, offering lively bitter cherry and black raspberry flavors that pick up weight with air. Juicy and nicely concentrated Cotes du Rhone with strong finishing punch and lingering spiciness. 90 points”

Dolcetto is considered a light easy drinking red wine that pairs well with pastas and pizza dishes. This 2011 Prunotto Dolcetto d’Alba, from Piedmont, Italy, gives bright red cherry fruit with a soft texture, and fine structured palate that has a good persistence.

Laplace Madiran is a rich, concentrated wine, deep in color, with lots of depth. Comprised of 80% Tannat (the predominant red grape in the area), it is blended with 20% Cabernet Sauvignon to soften the tannins often associated with Tannat, and to add complexity. Try this interesting, sturdy red with just about any roasted, braised, or grilled meat dish.

Alexander Valley in Sonoma, California is an area known for their Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines, but they also make Merlots that have deep concentration balanced with finesse. This 2010 Simi Merlot has dark berry brooding flavors with spicy notes and exotic sandalwood aromatics all wrapped together with plush tannins.

The restauranteur and chef extraordinaire, Daniel Boulud, knows West Coast pinot noir—and Red Burgundy, of course—and, we’re sure, has tasted dozens and dozens over the years. That he chose this one from Au Bon Climat—ABC to the trade—for his restaurant is not suprising.

With prices of California cabs and pinots going up and up, this beauty represents very good value.
