Axia Xinomavro/Syrah

Alpha Estate, Axia Xinomavro/Syrah, 2006

Purple-red colour, delicate nose of violets, cloves and kirsch, elegant tannins, well structured with wonderful depth of flavour and vanilla notes. Xinomavro is a thick skinned variety often with strong tannins that are tamed and smoothed out with a period of ageing in oak. A variety that is becoming more well known for producing remarkable wines.

Santorini Asyrtiko White

Domaine Sigalas, Santorini Asyrtiko White, 2009

Asyrtiko is the main white grape of Santorini (one of the Greek Cyclades Islands in the South Aegean) and has a character similar to a light Sauvignon Blanc. Light yellow color with green highlights citrus flavors, and a lemon intensity, particular of the grape variety. Excellent structure, good acidity which brings out the flavors, pleasant on the finish.

Paranga

Kir-Yianni, Paranga, 2007

“The grapes are sourced primarily from the crus of Agios Panteleimon within the Amyndeon Appellation in Greek Macedonia.
Paranga is a refreshing and jammy combination: a supple Merlot in the background with a touch of a very spicy Syrah under the spell of a light and more easy-to-drink Xinomavro. Its light ruby red color and herbal undertones are alluring giving rise to a complex bouquet of cinnamon, clove, and green pepper, and a long finish. It is made to be consumed young. Serve it cool as an aperitif or along with barbecue and spicy food in general.”
Adapted from the importer’s website.
[60% Xinomavro, 20% Merlot, 20% Syrah]
‘Kir-Yianni’ translates as ‘St. John’s Estate.’

Santorini Asyrtiko/Athiri White

Domaine Sigalas, Santorini Asyrtiko/Athiri White, 2009

This is a lovely dry white blended from 2 grape varieties, both ancient and native to the islands of the Aegean, in this case, Santorini. Although not related, they are in the sauvignon blanc family tastewise. You will find some grapefruit and lemon aromas and flavors. If possible, find a slice or two of spanakotiropita (cheese and spinach pie.)
