Bordeaux - Red

No other wine region in the world shares the glamour and fascination of Bordeaux. It is one of the world’s most diverse regions and is capable of producing wines from fine everyday reds at modest cost to the remarkable, concentrated classified gems that can age longer than any other wine in the world. Over the centuries a blend of three grape varietals has come to dominate: Cabernet Sauvignon for backbone and structure, Merlot for suppleness and texture, and Cabernet Franc for the sensual aroma that we all love in Bordeaux.

(St.-Julien) Magnum

Beychevelle, (St.-Julien) Magnum, 2006

“…The deep plum/ruby-tinged 2006 possesses charcoal, black cherry, cedar, and spice characteristics, sweet fruit, medium body, an elegant, but substantial style, and impressive concentration, texture, and length.” Robert Parker

(Margaux)

Alter Ego de Cht. Palmer, (Margaux), 2006

The second wine of the famed Chateau Palmer!

“(53% cabernet sauvignon, 41% merlot and 6% petit verdot) Bright ruby-red. Very ripe aromas of plum, mulberry, chocolate and animal fur. Sweet and reasonably deep, with good definition and energy. Finishes with fairly serious but nicely buffered tannins and very good length. This still needs some time to come together.” —Stephen Tanzer

(St. Emilion)

Angelots de Gracia, (St. Emilion), 2004

Michel Gracia, winemaker and proprietor of the renowned “garagiste” estate “Gracia” which, itself, has a tiny production of fewer than 400 cases, owns another sliver (3 acres) in St. Emilion where he produces—not a ‘2nd wine’ but a completely different cuvee.
“Les Angelots” is usually about 4/5 Merlot with the ballance Cabernet Franc. Medium-bodied, well-made, and surprisingly soft and accessible, it boasts licorice, black currants, and hints of blueberry.
This amazingly put-together St. Emilion is a super value at a third to a fifth the price of its ‘big brother.’

Angelus, (St.-Emilion), 2005

“This 7,000-case blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc will rival or perhaps eclipse vintages such as 2000, 1998, 1990, and 1989. Its dense purple color is followed by an extraordinary perfume of charcoal, espresso roast, blackberries, blueberries, and a hint of wood. In spite of its thick texture, terrific acidity, high tannins, and enormous intensity as well as richness, it is surprisingly approachable, but given how slowly the 1989 and 1990 have aged, I would recommend cellaring it for 8-10 years. It should keep for three decades. A brilliant wine!” —Robert Parker

(St.-Emilion)

Angelus, (St.-Emilion), 2006

“A spectacular effort (what’s new?), this brilliant offering from proprietor Hubert de Bouard is another classic. A blend of 62% Merlot and 38% Cabernet Franc, it boasts an inky/purple color as well as a sumptuous bouquet of creosote, blueberry pie, espresso roast, blackberries, and graphite. Extremely full-bodied and stunningly rich with a multi-layered texture, sweet tannin, and a 45-second finish, this exceptional 2006 is one of the great wines of St.-Emilion.” Robert Parker

Ausone, (St.-Emilion), 2005

“A tiny production of just over 1,300 cases will make the 2005 Ausone impossible to find, but proprietor Alain Vauthier continues to exhibit the Midas touch with his perfectionist efforts at this estate. This brilliant, blue/black-hued offering reveals an extraordinarily youthful, but promising nose of incense, blueberries, blackberries, currants, licorice, and crushed rocks. This intense 2005 boasts powerful, super-layered, multidimensional flavors with tremendous extraction, yet they come across as incredibly sublime, even delicate for such a stunningly concentrated, full-bodied effort. A masterpiece of concentration and balance, it will no doubt be drinking well a century from now. Anticipated maturity: 2030-2080+.” —Robert Parker

(St.-Emilion)

Ausone, (St.-Emilion), 2006

“One of the handful of candidates for wine of the vintage is the 2006 Ausone. In fact, while tasting it, I was thinking, is there any estate in Bordeaux that, since 1998, has made as many legendary wines as proprietor Alain Vauthier has at his beloved Ausone? Boasting an inky/blue/purple color as well as an extraordinary, precise bouquet of minerals, flowers, blueberry liqueur, and black currants, this wine possesses fabulous fruit and great intensity, but what makes it so special is its precision, focus, and almost ethereal lightness despite substantial flavor intensity and depth. It is a ballerina with density and power. The abundant noticeable tannin is sweet and, not surprisingly, very finely grained. It should be cellared for a decade, and consumed over the following half century.” Robert Parker
