Tenuta dell'Ornellaia, "Ornellaia" Magnum, 2007

The 2007 Ornellaia is remarkably open and accessible, very much in keeping with the personality of the vintage. Clean, minerally notes frame a core of silky, perfumed dark fruit, mocha, spices, licorice, grilled herbs and leather that impresses for its exceptional length. The 2007 is not a big, massive Ornellaia, but rather a wine built on elegance and finesse, both of which are on full display. The 2007 should drink well with a minimum of cellaring.
The 2007 Ornellaia is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot.

Alte di Altesi

Altesino, Alte di Altesi, 2006

“Altesino’s 2006 Alte d’Altesi (one third each: Sangiovsese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon) is another plump, juicy wine loaded with dark fruit. Medium to full in body, it offers notable depth and polish.”

Pinot Noir "Kris"

Franz Haas, Pinot Noir "Kris", 2008

Pinot Noir Nero (aka Pinot Nero) is finding a very favorable home in the northeastern area of Italy. There are several excellent producers of Pinot Noir in the Alto-Adige region that made the other Pinot cousin, Pinot Grigio so famous. A very fine value Pinot Noir.

Amarone della Valpolicella

Bertani, Amarone della Valpolicella, 2001

“The 2001 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is a joyous wine to taste. This is a fairly restrained style for Amarone, offering superb overall balance and an irresistible, caressing texture on the palate. The perfumed red cherry fruit is remarkably fresh for a wine of this age and the plumpness balances the wine’s tannins with notable elegance.”

"Il Ducale" IGT Toscana

Ruffino, "Il Ducale" IGT Toscana, 2006

The lastest and superb generation of winemakers make a wine with more latitude of expression but within the great history of Ruffino Tuscan wines.
Based on Sangiovese, but blended with grapes outside the parameters of Chianti (20% each Merlot and Syrah.) The result is IL DUCALE.
The Syrah adds pleasant spicy hints which intertwine with scents of undergrowth and Mediterranean herbs, characteristic of Sangiovese and with the softness and roundness of the Merlot.

Arcanum II IGT

Tenuta di Arceno, Arcanum II IGT, 2006

Tenuta di Arceno’s history stretches back to the time of the Etruscans who dominated central Italy prior to the formation of the Roman Empire.
Three quarters cabernet and the rest merlot, the aromas and flavors here are quite pronounced with lots of dark berries and anise. A big mouthful from a well-known producer of Super Tuscans.
