"Chocolate Block" Meritage (Franschhoek Valley)

Boekenhoutskloof, "Chocolate Block" Meritage (Franschhoek Valley), 2008

Tasty cocoa, pepper and plum flavors here, with a sweet, round finish. Picks up herb and sweet earth hints too. A Châteauneuf du Pape from South Africa with the usual suspects in the blend: Grenache, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Viognier. A medium-bodied winner with lots going on.

"Fusion V"

De Toren, "Fusion V", 2007

De Toren is a boutique winery in the Stellenbosch appellation (South Africa). They specialise in the 5 Bordeaux varietals, which are blended into “Fusion V.” This wine is far more muscular than anything the Medoc is likely to produce and it still has the same cedar and black currant characteristics – a mouth-filling blend of new world energy and old world panache.

Red (Fairview Winery)

Goats do Roam, Red (Fairview Winery), 2009

A delicious blend that offers rich fruit with pepper, licorice and smoke nuances. Ruby red color. Good length and structure carrying to a long finish. Blackberry fruit and supple tannins. Think of this as a South African Cotes du Rhone(hence the pun.) A truly exceptional value!

"John X. Merriman"

Rustenberg, "John X. Merriman", 2006

“Plum & Cigar box aromatics prelude a multi-layered palate with an elegant tannin structure. A Bordeaux blend that typifies Rustenberg terroir with good ageing potential, if cellared correctly.”

Goats do Roam, "Bored Doe" (Fairview Winery) (Bordeaux Blend), 2008

A blend of Red Bordeaux varietals [thus the punned name “Bored Doe”] shows good, gentle oak integration and ripe deep fruit.

Back story from the winery web site:
“Madame Chevre, an udderley gorgeous doe, bored but mischievous, serenely looks out over her neatly manicured vineyards. She reluctantly conforms to legislation and tradition, and only utilizes Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Petit Verdot…."

Cabernet Sauvignon

De Trafford, Cabernet Sauvignon, 2006

“Impressive, deep red colour. Intense blackcurrant and other complex berries with some spice, fresh toast and floral aromas. Big, intense palate with a thick, broad texture and a long, fine, dry finish. Delicious now with a thick chunk of beef on the braai…”

Excelsior, Cabernet Sauvignon, 2008

To be honest, we don’t know how the folks at Excelsior turn out, year after year, a very fine cabernet; full of good fruit and even some spicy overtones at this incredible price.
A no-brainer, really.

Rustenberg, "Peter Barlow" Cabernet Sauvignon, 2005

“Dark and still gutsy, with espresso, blackberry, crushed fig and currant fruit all pushed by cocoa and bacony toast notes. A bit brooding, but has good enough drive on the finish.”
