"Domingos" (Portugal)

J.M. Fonseca, "Domingos" (Portugal), 2005

This extraordinary bargain offering is a blend of half Syrah and half Touriga Nacional (the primary componant of the great Vintage Ports.)It is a full-bodied wine showing some sweet fruit, minerality and cassis on the nose. Quite smooth and fruit-driven, it would go nicely with roast meats and fowl or with cheeses after dinner.
Note: “Domongos” is an off-shoot of the great house of Jose Maria da Fonseca which has been making world-class ports and wines for over 160 years.

"Periquita Branco" (White) (Portugal)

J.M. Fonseca, "Periquita Branco" (White) (Portugal), 2009

Portuguese white wines are a world unto themselves; having nothing to do with the major European varietals Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc nor Riesling. Periquita 2009 Branco is a light white wine, a blend of the local variety Arinto—for its sharp brightness—and a clone of Muscat—for its good fruit and touch of sweetness. A quite pleasant, off-the-beaten-track, glass and a good value.

Vila Santa Red

J. Portugal Ramos, Vila Santa Red, 2006

The Vila Santa Blend shows an intense garnet color in the glass and the aromas suggest very ripe black fruits blending beautifully with the spicy character imparted by the barrels. On the palate it is elegant and full bodied with soft tannins. This is a big, powerful and full wine best paired with rich, hearty stews, roasted and grilled meats, and aged cheeses.

The Vila Santa red blend marries Aragonês, Trincadeira, Alicante Bouschet and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.
