New Zealand - White

In recent years the New Zealand category has become more and more popular with our discerning clients. This is largely driven by the wines made from the sauvignon blanc which can span several different styles. From nice uncomplicated, delicious, zingy little fruit bombs at a price point that is lower than in recent years to the more exotic and serious contenders from such producers as Cloudy Bay, Dog Point, Palliser, Craggy Range, Saint Clair,Pegasus Bay etc…The list could go on and on.
But in the love affair with sauvignon blanc it’s important to remember that there are other excellent white wines coming out of New Zealand that are worth trying. eg. Chardonnay & Riesling. Chardonnay is now available at several different levels, from the reasonably priced, delicious unoaked styles from Kim Crawford and Babich *to really outstanding, classic examples from producers like *Kumeu River, Craggy Range, Felton Road, Pegasus Bay and the delicious wines from the wonderful Nelson winery – Neudorf that can hold their own against examples from any other wine region in the world. We now have Rieslings from several varied regions and they cover different styles and price points. Look for really exciting rieslings from Alan Scott, Felton Road and the Waipara winery, Pegasus Bay. When you talk with winemakers you will find many who will tell you that Chardonnay or Riesling makes the best white wine coming out of New Zealand.

But whatever you choose, you will always get a wine that is exciting, delicious and packed with pure fruit flavors.

Chardonnay

Cloudy Bay, Chardonnay, 2006

The scent of white flowers and fresh citrus fruits – lemons, limes and grapefruit – all temptingly mingled with the savory complexity of toasted nuts and oatmeal. The silky palate shows lively citrus flavours and seamlessly integrated spicy French oak. Expresses the combination of natural yeast fermentation and vibrant Marlborough fruit in a wine that will age gracefully over the next five to seven years.

Chardonnay (Central Otago)

Mt. Difficulty, Chardonnay (Central Otago), 2007

Slightly tight in structure, with a tart, racy edge to the toasty pear and tobacco flavors, lingering on the expressive finish. [Very nice now but] this has plenty to develop.

Chardonnay "Moutere" (Nelson)

Neudorf Vineyards, Chardonnay "Moutere" (Nelson), 2007

” Lovely burgundian reduced nose (as opposed to a screwcap reduced nose!). Smoky. Quite different from most NZ Chardonnays. Really racy and confident. Well integrated and lovely already though there is sufficient density here to believe in some useful future evolution.”

Chardonnay (Waipara)

Pegasus Bay, Chardonnay (Waipara), 2007

This wine has been made utilising the traditional techniques which have made the chardonnay of the Burgundy region in France so famous: a hands-off approach so that until the last, or blending, stage, the wine has largely made itself.
Look for stone fruit and corn characters supported by hints of bacon and grilled mushrooms. Some minerality keeps the chardonnay fruit ballanced.

Chardonnay

Te Awa, Chardonnay, 2007

The palate is silky with concentrated stone fruit and floral flavors. This powerful wine retains elegance through its refreshing acidity, fine structure and lingering finish. Quite well-made, upscale and up there with the fancy Californians at a much better price.
