As usual, the great “Doktor of Bernkastel” has produced a wonderful Spatlese. It shows spiced mineral scents, is light to medium-bodied, satin-textured, and appealing; it pleases with its lush texture as well as flavorful flower and white fruit-dominated character. Drink it over the next 5 years.

Riesling (67) and Pinot Blanc (33). This wine comes from two brothers, Alex, a wine importer and Erik, a tattoo artist. Together they created Big Tattoo White in honor of their mother, Liliana, who died of cancer in 2000. Alex created the blend and Erik designed the label using Liliana’s favorite symbol, the Fleur de Lys. For every bottle sold, the brothers donate 50 cents to the Hospice of Northern Virginia and other breast cancer-related charities in the name of Liliana S. Bartholomaus.

This blend is full of floral and peach aromas followed by flavors of citrus, apple and melon finishing with lingering hints of honeydew and stone.

Again, this year, here’s a bed-rock definition of Kabinett. There’s a hint of guava; the wine is slightly spritzy, tangy and alive, it glows with energy and it’s markedly drier than previous vintages.

Universally regarded as one of the rising stars of the new generation of Rheingauers. A small estate of 5.8 hectares. Extraordinarily aromatic, vigorous wines from a vintner who grows more commanding each vintage.
The punny name notwithstanding, this is from the Geisenheimer Rothenberg, one of the best sites in the Rheingau. Superb value with great depth…and the bedrock quality is there in spades.

Schloss Reinhartshausen has been identified with production of rare and majestic German Rieslings since 1337. Across the centuries, this magnificent estate on the banks of the Rhine has played a central role in the Rheingau district’s reputation as a source of some of the world’s most transcendent white wines. These 15 acres, owned exclusively by the Schloss, produce sublime rieslings full of fruit and touch of spiciness and earth.

Lovely golden yellow color. On the light side but very enjoyable with some citrus, apple and peach hints on the nose and palate. Light acidity with a smooth, slightly sweet finish. From one of the finest producers of riesling in the Phalz.

The Urziger Wurzgarten, with weathered red volcanic and slate soils produces wines with exotic, spicy aromas and mesmerizing earthiness. The wine has a delicate spiciness combined with the typical fruity characteristic (peach blossom) of the Riesling grape. Ripe and medium intense with a long finish.

Long ago, stone steps were built into this vineyard’s steep hillside to help workers reach the vines. The iron-infused, red slate soil produces wines that are muscular and complex, with an intense mineral finish.
This is their lightest and most delicate style, from normally ripe grapes picked early in the harvest.

The Dr. Loosen estate has been in the same family for over 200 years. When Ernst Loosen assumed ownership of the estate in 1988, he soon realized that with upgrafted vines averging 60 years old, and vineyard sites rated according to his estate-specific classification, he had the raw materials to create stunningly intense, world-class wines. The wines are produced with minimum handling and “technological meddling.” Ernst Loosen’s goal is to produce wines that are lucious, complex and true to their roots.
