Durkheimer Hochbenn Riesling Kabinett

Kurt Darting, Durkheimer Hochbenn Riesling Kabinett, 2008

Again, this year, here’s a bed-rock definition of Kabinett. There’s a hint of guava; the wine is slightly spritzy, tangy and alive, it glows with energy and it’s markedly drier than previous vintages.

Estate Riesling

Donnhoff, Estate Riesling, 2009

The estate has been family-owned since 1750. There has been great praise in the wine press for Herr Donnhoff for his extraordinary Rieslings from Germany’s Nahe valley and he is seen as the ambassador of that region. The wine is very fresh with hints of sweet-smelling flowers. No ‘riesling heaviness’ at all but plenty of substance. At this price, pounce!

Tittenheimer Apotheke Riesling Spatlese Feinherb

Bernard Eifel, Tittenheimer Apotheke Riesling Spatlese Feinherb, 2007

The “Apotheke” vineyard, near the town of Trittenheim, is considered to be one of the finest micro-climates on the Mosel river. The Trittenheim wines display the excellence of Mosel Riesling: fine spiciness and a lively acidity paired with an elegant richness of flavor.

Riesling Kabinett "Jean Baptiste"

Gunderloch, Riesling Kabinett "Jean Baptiste", 2007

Jean Baptiste is a classic medium dry Kabinett typical for the red soil of Gunderlochs vineyards.

“Peach, tangerine zest and musk melon in the nose lead to an orange sorbet-like palate with smoky, wet stone and bitter citrus zest inflections. The residual sugar here really supports the fruit, then backs off to permit a finish highly suggestive of minerality.”
Wine Advocate

Piesporter Estate Riesling

Reinhold Haart, Piesporter Estate Riesling, 2007

The Haart family has the longest winemaking tradition in the village of Piesport. As far back as 1337, documents show a certain Johannes Haart owning vineyard property in Piesport and with over 600 years of history behind them, the Haart’s have shown a rare dedication and love for wine.
Theo Haart, Winemaker of the year 2007 by Gaullt Millau, tries to produce fruity (hints of pear, lime, green apple, etc.), filigreed Rieslings that are wonderful now but with a good ten years of enjoyment ahead.

Rudesheimer Berg Rottland Riesling Spatlese

Weingut Johannishof Familien Eser *WC*, Rudesheimer Berg Rottland Riesling Spatlese, 2006

“Golden yellow. Rich aromas of cling peach, sage and nut oil. Ripe apricot fruit communicates a velvety texture thanks to the wine’s muted acidity. Finishes with good grip….”

Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett

Kerpen==, Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett, 2007

Bright, young, lovely Riesling showing a little lemon-lime-grapefruit in the mouth preceeded by some apricot and mineral aromas. Little richness but, still, a pleasant mouthful of flavors.

Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese Artist Label

Kerpen, Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese Artist Label, 2008

This is pretty much on the lush side, with sweet lemon, apricot and minerality. The texture is nicely smooth. This seems open and easy, but quite long on the finish. A medium -bodied, dry Riesling with a touch of sweetness.

Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett

Kerpen, Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett, 2009

A nose of red apples and creamy minerality. A firm and well structured wine with a spicy and long finish. Though striking now, Kerpen Riesling is a white with excellent aging potential. Many consider the Sonnenuhr vineyard outside the town of Wehlen in the Mosel the best site for riesling just about anywhere.
