French Country

French Country wines are wines from the south and southwest of France. These wines are from less glamorous appellations than Burgundy or Bordeaux, but without a doubt they represent some of the very best wine values in the world.

Rouge Corbieres

A d'Aussieres, Rouge Corbieres, 2007

Château d’Aussières has made wine since the Roman era and it is now part of the Domaines Baron de Rothschild (Lafite) wine portfolio. The “A” d’Aussieres is a special label just for Sherry-Lehmann.
This well-structured red from the southwestern mountainous region shows some wonderful rich aromas and flavors of dark cherries, plums and some nice spiciness. It also nicely captures the earthiness of its origins.
[Syrah, Grenache, Mouvedre, and Carignan.]

Aussieres Blanc

Chateau D'Aussieres, Aussieres Blanc, 2006

Château d’Aussières has made wine since the Roman era and it is now part of the Domaines Baron de Rothschild (Lafite) wine portfolio.
Discreet and elegant on the nose with aromas of melon and lemon and quite mellow light oak. On the palate, the attack is lively, while remaining delicate. The wine is rich without being heavy. Exotic and citrus fruit mingle on the finish. Surprising length and the wine is well-balanced throughout.

Banyuls

Domaine de la Casa Blanca, Banyuls, 2008

Herve Levano @ Casa Blanca makes his sweet red wine in the style of a Vintage Port, emphasizing the fresh fruit flavors. Made solely from Grenache Noir, the grapes macerate for 2 weeks after the addition of grape spirits. The wine then ages in Bordeaux barrels for 12 months, which is unusual in this appellation and perhaps the secret of the great success of this domain’s wine. The result is a deep, intense wine with layers of flavors, ranging from cooked plums and dark berry fruits to chocolate and spice. The finish is long, lingering and clean.

Bouches-du-Rhone Blanc VDP

Domaine de Trevallon, Bouches-du-Rhone Blanc VDP, 2006

Winemaking here is as natural as it comes. There’s no destemming, with bunches being fermented whole, without any added yeast, and without temperature control. After a two week maceration the wines are pressed into old oak where they mature for 20–25 months before being bottled unfiltered.
[Mostly Marsanne and Roussanne with about 10% Chardonnay.]
This is in the family of a superb white Cotes du Rhone or Chateauneuf Blanc. Quite rich, vinous, good, rich fruit with a touch of vanilla/oak.

Le Pigeoulet Blanc (VDP Vaucluse)

Brunier, Le Pigeoulet Blanc (VDP Vaucluse), 2009

This so-called ‘country white’ is anything but!
A very fresh, enticing blend of Grenache Blanc, Clairette and Roussanne, it shows aromas of melon/peach, chamomile and yellow apple. The texture is round and the finish quite full and creamy.
The style and the quality are right up there with some white Chateauneufs that are two or three times the price.

Le Pigeoulet Rouge VDP Vaucluse

Brunier, Le Pigeoulet Rouge VDP Vaucluse, 2007

“Open and soft, but persistent, with a core of mineral, garrigue, black cherry and tobacco notes that mingle through the finish, where the minerally edge takes over. Textbook regional character….”
-Wine Spectator

Acclaimed at a staff tasting—01/16/10— with Daniel Brunier (co-proprietor) as a lovely, serious ‘Rhone’ and pretty close to a much higher-priced Gigondas or Cotes du Rhone Villages.

[80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 5% Cinsault, 5% Carignan]

No-label-red

Domaine de la Jasse Cabernet, Rouge "Vieilles Vignes", 2006

Splendid, deep and intense black/purple color. A pretty bouquet with aromatic touches of velvety black fruits and lavender. Delicious mouth-filling fruit flavor-concentrated yet balanced and rich in ripe red fruit with satin tannins and a soft finish. This fine Cabernet blend will provide delicious drinking over the next few years.
Serving suggestions: Serve at room temperature with red meat (roast beef is a perfect match) and excellent with many cheeses.

Cabernet Sauvignon/Syrah Vin de Pays DOC

Val de L'Ours, Cabernet Sauvignon/Syrah Vin de Pays DOC, 2008

A new find here at Sherry-Lehmann! A lovely scented little gem full of nice dark fruit flavors (from the Cab.) and even a little spicy richness from the Syrah. With so-called French Country wines getting more expensive all the time, this $9. beauty is a steal!
