Blanc (Pessac-Leognan)

Archambeau, Blanc (Pessac-Leognan), 2008

The world-class vineyards of Pessac-Leognan (which used to be in open country side but are now in the suburbs of the city of Bordeaux) often produce both red and white wine. The whites are blends of sauvignon blanc and semillon and account for some of the great whites in the world (although Burgundians would surely disagree!) Chateau d‘Archambeau is a very fine estate whose white Bordeaux is very clean and dry with hints of citrus like grapefruit and lemon lime. There is a lot of class here for a very moderate price.

Bordeaux Blanc

Bertranon, Bordeaux Blanc, 2008

Although probably best know in French wine circles for their delightful sweet wine from Loupiac, their small, select production of dry, white Bordeaux is quite successful.
A lovely blend of Sauvignon Blanc and a little Semillon shows nice citrus and new-mown hay aromas followed by pleasant peach and apricot flavors. Pretty sophisticated in this price range.

(Pessac-Leognan)

Carbonnieux Blanc, (Pessac-Leognan), 2006

“Crisp honeyed grapefruit, white currant, and some smoked herbs are present in this classic, textbook dry white from Pessac-Leognan. The texture is gorgeous, and the wine aromatic and pure. Drink it over the next 15 years.
This is a strong vintage for Bordeaux’s dry white wines, probably as good or better than 2005. Crisp acidity combined with outstanding concentration and the fact that most of the white grapes were harvested before the rains began in mid-September resulted in an impressive group of wines.”

(Pessac-Leognan)

Carbonnieux Blanc, (Pessac-Leognan), 2007

Clean juicy citrus fruit on the nose, lemon peel and melon; soft on the palate to begin with, but good mineral freshness develops, and lasts well; a very good quaff.
Year after year, in the top handful of superb white Bordeaux.

Robert Parker rating 90-92 pts.

(Bordeaux Blanc)

Clarendelle, (Bordeaux Blanc), 2006

From the Clarence Dillon family of wines—owners of the inestimable Chateaux Haut-Brion and La Mission Haut-Brion. A beautifully balanced combination of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc that hints of grapefruit, pineapple and lemon/lime notes.

(Barsac)

Climens, (Barsac), 2005

“A five-star wine in the making. The final ‘assemblage’ was not made, so one could only taste elements of the wine. But even from this, the exceptional quality was clear. The total crop was 24 hl/ha; nearly twice the average for 1995-2004. This is indicative of the exceptional conditions in the vineyard throughout the harvesting. My notes keep retuning to words like intensity and freshness of the perfume, citrus/pineapple aroma, enormous, rich flavours with long, lingering freshness, finesse and sweetness and acidity balance. 5 stars” David Peppercorn, MW, Decanter Magazine

(Bordeaux Blanc)

Cos d'Estournel Blanc, (Bordeaux Blanc), 2005

One of Bordeaux’s top red wine chateaux, Cos d’Estournel, has released its first ever white wine.

A Bordeaux white blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. Despite the chateau’s location in the south of St Estephe, (and a neighbor to Lafite in Pauillac) the vineyards for Cos blanc are located at the northernmost tip of the Medoc between the river and the Atlantic.
“This beauty exhibits copious notes of figs, melons, and green apple skins intermixed with mango, lemon zest, and nectarines. The wood component is barely detectable in this medium-bodied, stylish white.”
Parker Rating: 90 pts.

(Barsac)

Coutet, (Barsac), 2006

“Almost as excellent as the 2003. There’s intense botrytis spice on the nose, with lemon peel and dried pineapple. Full-bodied, superspicy and intense. Extremely racy. A beautiful wine.”
