American - Red

In the past 40 years, we have seen American wine production come of age. The United States is now the fifth largest wine producing country in the world, with California contributing approximately 90% to the total! In a relatively short period of time, it is remarkable to see the enormous diversity and high quality that is now being achieved in the vineyards of California, Oregon, Washington and New York.

Red

Archipel, Red, 2003

Ample sunshine and rocky, well-drained soils, produce small, concentrated berries. The resultant wines are deeply colored with distinctive flavors and rich concentration.
Ripe aromas of cassis, black cherry and cedar open to background notes of black licorice and cocoa. The palate mirrors the aromas amidst a rich, firmly structured texture and lengthy finish.
[The tips of the mountains rise above the Sonoma fog mimicking islands. Hence “Archipel”; French for archipelago.]

55% Merlot; 29% Cabernet Sauvignon; 16% Cabernet Franc.

"Topiary" Virginia Red Wine

Boxwood Winery, "Topiary" Virginia Red Wine, 2007

Opening several years ago with the goal of putting Virginia on the wine map, the winery—just outside Middleburg—hired wine & vineyard consultants from France and Rachel Martin, the Managing Director, studied in Bordeaux herself.
“Topiary” is Boxwoods “St. Emilion” blended from Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot and a little Malbec. Nice plum and red berry aromas, a broad mouthfeel with nice “Bordeaux” styling.

Virginia Red Wine

Boxwood Winery, Virginia Red Wine, 2007

Opening several years ago with the goal of putting Virginia on the wine map, the winery—just outside Middleburg—hired wine & vineyard consultants from France and Rachel Martin, the Managing Director, studied in Bordeaux herself.
This is Boxwood’s version of a ‘left bank’ Bordeaux (Pauillac, for example). A blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with some Petit Verdot and Merlot. Some nice blue fruits and cassis with a little Medoc tannin and leather. Nice mouthful.

No-label-red

Buty, Columbia Rediviva, 2006

“Velvety-textured and elegant on the palate, a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Syrah. Smoked meat, sausage, lavender, and black currant aromas lead to a ripe, sweetly fruited wine already revealing complex flavors as well as a lengthy finish. Drink it over the next 8-10 years.
These are the best wines yet from Caleb Foster, owner/winemaker of Buty Winery.”

"Five"

Cain Vineyards, "Five", 2005

2005 gave Cain Cellars plenty of “hang time” to allow the grapes to ripen gently. Unlike the yields on the valley floor, the yields in the Cain Vineyard were typically low. The 2005 Cain Five is their most restrained wine since 1999. The cool weather on Spring Mountain preserves the firmness of the tannins and the freshness of the aromas. Because of the long “hang time,” they were able to include 14% Petit Verdot for optimum color and structure.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cardinale, Cabernet Sauvignon, 2005

95 Points — “Deep ruby/purple to the rim, with notes of graphite, black cherry and black currant liqueur, licorice, and spice box, the wine has silky tannins, full body, a gorgeously layered, rich mouthfeel, and a long finish with moderately high tannins and refreshing acidity. It’s a big wine for sure, but it has uncanny elegance, purity, and length.” Robert M. Parker, Jr., The Wine Advocate, #174, December 2007

Mountain Cuvee Meritage

Chappellet, Mountain Cuvee Meritage, 2007

“A whopper of a bargain, from the ripe, round and riveting 2007 vintage, is the Chappellet Mountain Cuvee. Mostly cabernet and merlot, this is blended as an “early drinker” by the winery. I’m told that in 2007, they made less of the signature cabernet ($45-plus) so a fair amount of the extra good juice was put into the Mountain Cuvee. This is ridiculously easy to drink…a great price for Napa cabernet!”

Meritage (Columbia Valley)

Col Solare, Meritage (Columbia Valley), 2006

“Polished and open-textured, delivering a lively mouthful of blueberry and currant fruit shaded with nice hints of cream and white pepper. The finish lingers seductively. this is distinctive and much smoother in texture than previous vintages”
