New Zealand - Red

Pinot Noir

New Zealand’s moderate climate and vintner enthusiasm have combined to make a huge success with Pinot Noir. Styles range with terroir from Martinborough’s ripe and intense varieties to the Central Otago’s well-aging boastful black cherry ones. Lately, we have seen some fruity and elegant examples coming out of Marlborough (often at a lower price).

Cabernet Sauvignon

Even though white grapes hold most the territory in New Zealand, the Cabernet Sauvignon is the most widely planted red grape in the warmer northernmost wine regions. This grape packs a plummy punch in structure and elegance and blends beautifully with Merlot.

Merlot

The New Zealand Merlot shines with smooth and rich blackberry flavor. It’s second to the Cab in red grape crop quantities and is often blended with the Cab to make for a full-bodied berry bang.

"Sophia" Meritage (Gimblett Gravels)

Craggy Range, "Sophia" Meritage (Gimblett Gravels), 2005

“The 2005 Sophia is a blend of 62% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Franc and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, hand-picked, de-stemmed and aged for 19 months in French oak of which 80% is new. It displays a [somewhat perfumed] nose but has even better delineation with scents of red cherries, wild strawberry and gravel, the palate full-bodied and ripe with layers of thick black fruits on the backward finish…”

"The Gimblett" Meritage

Trinity Hill, "The Gimblett" Meritage, 2005

Named by world famous Master of Wine Jancis Robinson as the top value Bordeaux style blend from the three blind tasting events she attended that featured the best of red Bordeaux of 2005. (And her personal favourite, she confessed).
Elegant, powerful and concentrated, the five traditional varieties of Bordeaux, as grown in the Gimblett Gravels, Hawkes Bay, further confirms the enormous potential of the Gimblett Gravels region of Hawkes Bay to produce world class Bordeaux-style red wines.

Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot Reserve (Gimblett Gravels)

Villa Maria, Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot Reserve (Gimblett Gravels), 2006

The vineyards of Villa Maria which are located in the driest and warmest parts of the Gimblett Gravels, Malborough, New Zealand.
This is a lovely bottle in the “new world” style without the heaviness often associated with some California fruit bombs.

Crème de casis, bitter dark chocolate, coffee grindings, dried mint and graphite flow seamlessly from the nose to the palate. The palate is well structured with fine -grained
tannins, concentrated, but with an overall elegance that can be difficult to find when coupled with this intensity.

Pinot Noir

Felton Road, Pinot Noir, 2008

…Nose of ripe raspberry countered with earth, toast and dark perfume… maybe deep red rose petals….
interplay of juicy, mouthwatering acid and ripe, rich raspberry and boysenberry fruit.
Relatively complex for such a youthful wine, displaying minerals with dusty tannin and a kick of mocha.
Adapted from the winemaker’s notes.

Merlot

Te Awa, Merlot, 2004

Te Awa is a unique place. The full name in Maori “Te Awa o Te Atua” means River of God, a reference to the subterranean streams over which Te Awa is sited.

The Gimblett Gravels Wine Growing district in Hawke’s Bay, in which Te Awa occupies a premium parcel of land, is renowned for the quality of its wines. Warm temperatures, low rainfall, and the permeability of the soils create an almost paradoxical blend of consistency and complexity – to be sought, savoured and remembered.
