New Zealand - Red

Pinot Noir

New Zealand’s moderate climate and vintner enthusiasm have combined to make a huge success with Pinot Noir. Styles range with terroir from Martinborough’s ripe and intense varieties to the Central Otago’s well-aging boastful black cherry ones. Lately, we have seen some fruity and elegant examples coming out of Marlborough (often at a lower price).

Cabernet Sauvignon

Even though white grapes hold most the territory in New Zealand, the Cabernet Sauvignon is the most widely planted red grape in the warmer northernmost wine regions. This grape packs a plummy punch in structure and elegance and blends beautifully with Merlot.

Merlot

The New Zealand Merlot shines with smooth and rich blackberry flavor. It’s second to the Cab in red grape crop quantities and is often blended with the Cab to make for a full-bodied berry bang.

"Te Kahu" Meritage (Gimblett Gravels)

Craggy Range, "Te Kahu" Meritage (Gimblett Gravels), 2008

Opaque garnet core with youthful crimsom hues. Aromas of ripe plum and fruit cake characters neatly meshed with sandalwood and spicy cinnamon overtones. The overall aromatic impression is one of brooding complexity. Fine layers of mouth filling tannin provide the texture and structure to support ample fruit flesh. Natural acidity completes this seamless integration, resulting in wine with uncommon length and power.

"The Gimblett" Meritage

Trinity Hill, "The Gimblett" Meritage, 2005

Named by world famous Master of Wine Jancis Robinson as the top value Bordeaux style blend from the three blind tasting events she attended that featured the best of red Bordeaux of 2005. (And her personal favourite, she confessed).
Elegant, powerful and concentrated, the five traditional varieties of Bordeaux, as grown in the Gimblett Gravels, Hawkes Bay, further confirms the enormous potential of the Gimblett Gravels region of Hawkes Bay to produce world class Bordeaux-style red wines.

Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot Reserve (Gimblett Gravels)

Villa Maria, Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot Reserve (Gimblett Gravels), 2006

The vineyards of Villa Maria which are located in the driest and warmest parts of the Gimblett Gravels, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand.
This is a lovely bottle in the “new world” style without the heaviness often associated with some California fruit bombs.

Creme de cassis, bitter dark chocolate, coffee grindings, dried mint and graphite flow seamlessly from the nose to the palate. The palate is well structured with fine-grained
tannins, concentrated, but with an overall elegance that can be difficult to find when coupled with this intensity.

Pinot Noir

Mt. Difficulty, Pinot Noir, 2008

This wine exhibits a lovely breadth and depth of aromas: red fruits of the forest along with black cherry underpinned by savoury, dried herb and black pepper. The wine has a rich front-palate which displays these same characters in abundance, while the mid-palate is fleshy and well-textured. The wine finishes with a lovely combination of fine-grained tannins and fruit.

Pinot Noir "The Great Walter" (Martinborough)

Palliser Estate, Pinot Noir "The Great Walter" (Martinborough), 2008

The fourth in the Palliser “Great Dog” series, this is a very special Pinot Noir from our Pencarrow vineyard in Martinborough. It has been barrel aged for 16 months in two-thirds new oak casks, has excellent colour, layers of ripe classic Pinot Noir flavours, structure and texture.

The bouquet is quite extraordinary, displaying complex aromas of red/black cherry, vanillin oak, spice and subtle game.

It’s flavour-packed and meltingly sweet on the palate showing velvety texture, excellent weight and fine, chalky tannins providing a firm structure and a lengthy dry finish. The wine is intensely flavoured and sturdy yet not heavy. A magnificent Pinot that you can confidently put away for a few years.

This superb pinot noir is a Sherry Lehmann exclusive.

Pinot Noir

Ata Rangi, Pinot Noir, 2008

“Martinborough stands out for its chardonnay, riesling and pinot noir.
In fact, the pinot noir I have tasted from Ata Rangi… can stand alongside any of those found in Burgundy.
They possess a ripe, plummy fruit character with an appealing savoury component that puts to shame many of the one-dimensional fruit bombs found elsewhere.”
